SCHOLARSHIPS & AFFORDING YOUR EDUCATION
American University’s School of Professional & Extended Studies offers a limited number of partial scholarships
to qualified students to facilitate their participation in their programs. Scholarship opportunities are currently
available for students participating in Graduate Professional Studies (GPS). All students (domestic and
international are encouraged to apply. Scholarship applications are available on the SPExS Admitted Students
portal at http://www.american.edu/spexs/admissions/admit.
Since Graduate Professional Studies is a non-degree program, students are not eligible for funding through
FAFSA. The majority of our students take out private student loans.
Students may also choose to participate in the American Payment Plan (APP) which breaks tuition into monthly
payments. For more information on the APP, please visit
http://www.american.edu/finance/studentaccounts/Payment-Plan-Overview.cfm.
INTERNSHIPS & EXPERIENTIAL EDUCATION
Graduate Professional Studies (GPS) students have access to the School of Professional & Extended Studies
Internship Database—the largest of its kind focusing on internships in the Washington, D.C. area. With over
3,000 internships in the database, many employers specifically turn to the School of Professional & Extended
Studies at American University and GPS for their semester interns. Students enrolled in GPS, regardless of
application date, are eligible for an internship during their semester in the program. Priority internships refer
to a select number of internships the School of Professional & Extended Studies has arranged in conjunction
with area organizations.
