A model of Self-Directed Professional Learning General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS) Transforming lives through learning A model of Self-Directed Professional Learning To be effective and worthwhile this learning needs to happen through structured relevant and meaningful activity that enables the individual to question, try out, and develop to enhance practice. Emphasises the need for the individual to be curious and critically explore as part of the leaning process; to be asking questions. Use professional standards to help form these questions. High quality professional learning is almost impossible to do in isolation. Opportunity to learn with and through others must be maximised. Through dialogue we can make sense of and develop meaning. The learning with or form others can take many forms. General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS) Transforming lives through learning Needs to be sufficient cognitive focus that really seeks to challenge and develop ideas, inform and question assumptions, extend knowledge and skills and deepen understandings of practice; there must be some cognitive element to the professional learning.
