PUAD 627: Politics, Policymaking, and Public Administration Important dates: June 3-4 June 12 June 13-17 Class at American University, Washington, DC Travel day & Opening Dinner Programming in Brussels, Belgium Course Description: Politics, Policymaking, and Public Administration (PUAD-627) is a required course for the Key Executive Leadership MPA degree. The course is designed to compare the challenges of politics, policymaking and public administration of the United States and European Union. As public servants are faced more and more with decisions having a global impact, this course is designed to provide a greater understanding of the processes and influences guiding those decisions both home and abroad. The first two days of the course at AU provides an review of the structure of the US government, and from that standard base of understanding, the relationship between the different stakeholders, lawmakers and policymakers. This prepares students for the second part of the course in Brussels. In Brussels, students learn from high-ranking officials from the EU Parliament, Commission and Council, and from staff members of various governance entities. How will that work? In your registration form, you will inform Key of your guest’s name so that we can place you together in a hotel room. Please note that all guests’ expenses are their responsibility. If you are bringing more than one guest, they will need to make their own hotel accommodations. When should I book my flight? You should reserve a ticket as soon as you are confirmed for the course. As with most flights, waiting until the last minute may result in an increased fare. 4 Can I arrive early or depart later? Yes. However, you are responsible for the additional costs. I don’t have a passport, what do I need to do to get one? To obtain a passport please visit http://travel.state.gov/passport/ . The passport should be valid up until 3 months prior to the trip. (3/12/2016 or earlier) What should I pack? Business casual attire is recommended for classes. Business attire is required for the visits at NATO and EU. Comfortable walking shoes are a must.
