Social Enterprise Program Economics Requirement
Because an understanding of economic fundamentals is essential for social enterprise practitioners, all graduates of the Social Enterprise MA
Program are required to have:
 A basic grounding in the principles of economics, including both micro and macro economics
 Additional graduate-level study of an aspect of economics relevant to each student’s specialization within social enterprise
Basic Economics
The basic grounding in the principles of economics requirement can be met in several ways:
OPTION 1:
Complete ECON-603
or
Complete FIN-605
Appropriate for students who will be taking additional economics courses.
Relevant for students interested in management and finance.
Students who satisfy the requirement with option 1 will complete a total of 42 credits for their MA degree in Social Enterprise.
OPTION 2:
Waive the requirement if you completed an economics major or minor as an undergraduate.
OPTION 3:
Waive the requirement if you completed courses in microeconomics and macroeconomics at an accredited institution with a
grade of B or better within 3 years of starting your MA degree in Social Enterprise.
OPTION 4:
Waive the requirement by scoring at least 74/100 on the SIS economics placement examination. (For students who have
mastered basic economics through self-study, work experience, taking courses that differ from Option 3, or any other
method of preparation). Please contact your academic advisor if you would like to pursue this option.
Students who satisfy the requirement with options 2, 3, or 4, will complete a total of 39 credits for their MA in Social Enterprise.
