Dear students,
Please remember that Monday, September 9 is the last day to make changes to your course schedule for
fall, either adding additional courses, internships or independent study projects (including SRPs and
thesis credits) or dropping courses with a 100% refund. The Academic Calendar, including the
University’s refund schedule, can be found at:
http://www.american.edu/loader.cfm?csModule=security/getfile&pageid=3466127. After September 9,
dropping courses will incur a financial penalty and a grade of 'W'. If you anticipate not being able to
meet this deadline for any reason, please let your advisor know in advance.
SIS Skills Institutes do not follow these registration deadlines. If you wish to add or drop a skills institute
after Monday, September 9, please email a Registration Request form (found at:
http://www.american.edu/provost/registrar/pdf/upload/Request-for-Registration-Action-February-20132.pdf) to sis-skills@american.edu no later than two days prior to the institute's start date. The Graduate
Advising office will then submit the necessary paperwork to the Registrar's office for the registration
change to be processed.
SRP, THESIS, INDEPENDENT STUDY REGISTRATION
SRPs, theses and independent studies must be registered via paper forms.
Thesis/SRP/independent study registration instructions and forms are available on the Graduate
Advising website: http://www.american.edu/sis/gradadvising/independent-study.cfm. Please
make sure to include any required attachments with your registration paperwork (for a thesis,
submit a full thesis proposal; for an SRP or independent study, submit a one to two page
description of the project).
The last day to register a SRP, thesis or independent study project for the fall 2013 semester is
Monday, September 9. Students are required to submit their completed registration materials
(including any necessary approvals and attachments) to the Graduate Advising office by Friday,
September 6 to allow time for processing. Incomplete paperwork will not be processed.
INTERNSHIP REGISTRATION
Internships (for academic credit or no-credit) are registered via paper forms. Registration forms
and instructions are available on the Graduate Advising website:
http://www.american.edu/sis/gradadvising/internships.cfm. Please make sure to include any
required attachments when submitting your registration paperwork.
As of fall 2013, all students registering internships for academic credit must register for an
internship course (For fall 2013: SIS-691-300OL - online only; or SIS-691-301HB - hybrid;
see Schedule of Classes for more information, including instructors and in-person dates
for hybrid course). The internship course will provide students the opportunity to reflect on their
internship experience, plan their career goals, and improve networking techniques. To register,
students should fill out the internship registration forms at the link above and return them to SIS
Grad Advising. Students do not need to obtain faculty approval to register for an internship
course. Questions about registration should be directed to the Graduate Advising office.
Questions about the course should be directed to the relevant instructor.
