New Academic Advisor, Marisa Rivero, holding Advising Appointments starting Mon, 9/16
Dear CRS students,
I hope your fall semester is off to a great start and you are settling into your semester routine as
easily as possible. I am happy to announce that our newest advisor, Marisa Rivero, will be
taking over advising CRS graduate students effective Monday, September 16.
Marisa is a proud SIS alumna having earned an MA in International Communication. She
returns to SIS with more than ten years of experience in international affairs, including
managing international training and exchange programs for both the Institute of International
Education and World Learning, and working in international development for the Latin American
region at Chemonics International. Marisa most recently worked in the AU Career Center
researching graduation outcomes.
Marisa has been working closely with the interim CRS advisors, Marley Crutcher, Mary Barton
and Kaitlin Capobianco, to ensure a smooth transition. You can reach Marisa at
mrivero@american.edu or 202-885-1649.
Additionally, several weeks ago I wrote to you explaining our new Express Advising format
during Add/Drop and referencing our new appointment only format during non-registration
periods. As I said then, this new model enables us to continue to help you finalize your
scheduling needs during “crunch times,” while providing more time for substantial advising
during the semester.
We will transition from Express Advising to appointments only on September 16. Each
graduate academic advisor is available for up to eighteen weekly 30-minute
appointments. This allows for each advisor to provide nearly 200 one-on-one appointments
during the non-registration periods of a given semester. The remainder of their time is spent
responding to student email inquiries, monitoring and updating student records, meeting and
communicating with program faculty and staff, and managing other advising activities that occur
throughout the semester.
Unlike Express Advising meetings, appointments must be scheduled at least one day in
advance. This enables advisors to thoroughly prepare for appointments while allocating their
remaining time to completing the additional tasks listed above. To maximize this time with your
advisor, please come with your own advising records/notes, a list of prepared questions,
and please be ready to take notes. Additionally, please be prepared to talk about yourself,
your interests, and your goals – both academically and professionally. Advisors work closely
with program faculty and staff, career advisors, and other offices and resources on campus. The
information you share with your advisor will help him or her determine whether a referral to one
of these partners is necessary to complete an action, or simply provide you with additional
information that will enhance your decision-making abilities and future advising conversations.
To schedule an appointment with your advisor, please call 202-885-1690. Appointments
are available in-person or via Phone or Skype for your convenience.
Please let us know if you have any questions about this new format. We look forward to meeting
with you!
Sincerely,
Nathan Slusher
Director, SIS Academic & Career Advising
