TODAY Last Day of Add/Drop Registration
Today, Monday, September 8 is the last day for students to make changes to their fall schedule with a 100%
refund. Exceptions are made for registration changes for 1 credit weekend skills institutes, which can be added or
dropped up until two days before the institute meets. (For more information on skills institute
registrations:http://www.american.edu/sis/skillsinstitutes/) Students who anticipate being unable to complete the
registration paperwork for internships or independent studies (including SRPs and theses) by today for any
reason should contact their academic advisor by COB todayto discuss options. For information on registering
independent studies (including SRPs and theses) and internships, please review the Add/Drop Registration FAQs or visit
the SIS Graduate Advising website. For other refund deadlines, please review theAcademic Calendar.
NEW Registration Open for September TOR exam (Sept 29-Oct 3)
Students planning to take the free Tool of Research exam to fulfill the SIS MA language requirement
(http://www.american.edu/sis/gradadvising/language.cfm) should be aware that the first (of two) exam period for the fall
2014 semester will be held September 29 - October 3, 2014, For more information on the TOR exam and to
register:http://www.american.edu/cas/clear/tor.cfm. The last day to register for the September exam is Friday,
September 19.
NEW Research/Teaching Assistant Positions open for SIS Graduate Students
There are currently 3-6 positions available for graduate students to work with SIS faculty in research/teaching assistant
roles, for 10 or 20 hours per week. To be considered, please send your resume to Jennifer Napolitano, SIS Faculty
Affairs Coordinator, at napolita@american.edu. Priority consideration will be given to resumes submitted before 5pm on
Wednesday, September 10.
NEW SIS Journal of International Service Call for Staff Applications
The Journal of International Service provides students with an opportunity to share their contributions to the field of
International Relations. The Journal is committed to publishing articles that represent the academic fields studied at the
School of International Service. The Journal is currently accepting applications for both Senior and Junior Staff
positions. Available Senior Staff positions include Marketing and Distribution Editor, Copyeditor and Managing Editor. To
apply for any of these positions, please send a resume, cover letter, and a 5-10 page writing sample
to americanujis@gmail.com by 9 am on Wednesday, September 17. For more information about the

Non-credit internships and the SIS Professional Experience Requirement
Students completing an internship this fall to fulfill the SIS MA Professional Experience requirement must register the
internship. Internships can be registered either for non-credit (no tuition charge, only fulfills the Professional Experience
requirement) or for academic credit (tuition charges apply, may fulfill the Elective requirement in addition to the
Professional Experience requirement). Students must submit their completed internship registration materials (including
any necessary approvals and attachments) to the Graduate Advising office by Thursday, September 4 to allow time for
processing before Monday, September 8. Students who anticipate securing a fall internship after the registration
deadline, or who will be unable to complete the registration paperwork by the deadline, should contact their
academic advisor in advance of the deadline to discuss options. For more information about the SIS Professional

Apply to Graduate for Fall 2014
Students planing to complete all program requirements this semester must apply to graduate via their myAU portal (under
Academics – Apply to Graduate). While students can apply through October 31, we recommend that you complete the
application as soon as possible (the application takes less than 5 minutes) so that your advisor can begin reviewing your
graduation eligibility for fall.

NEW Career Center Workshop: How to Prep for the PMF Online Assessment

The Presidential Management Fellows (PMF) Program is one of the best ways to launch a career in the federal
government. Graduate students and recent alumni who have received/are receiving their degree between December
2012 and August 2015 are invited to attend this workshop to learn more about the PMF application process, including how
to prep for the online assessment in early October.
Students interested in applying to the PMF program can also register for access to a special Blackboard Prep site with
fact sheets and materials that AU offers to help students prepare for the online assessment. To be given access to the
Blackboard site, please email AU.PMFcandidate@gmail.com (from your AU account or a Gmail account) including your
full name, graduation date and your AU school.

The Carnegie Endowment for International Peace is holding an inaugural open house for faculty and students interested
in international affairs. Students will have the opportunity to learn about Carnegie’s role in public policy and international
relations, working in a think tank, and our Junior Fellows Program. Carnegie President Jessica T. Mathews will introduce
the evening in conversation with Tom Carver, Vice President for Communications and Strategy. Scholars Karim
Sadjadpour and George Perkovich will speak about their careers, offer insights into the nature of their daily work, and field
questions. A reception will follow with an opportunity to meet and network with our scholars and staff working on Asia,
Europe, the Middle East, Nuclear Policy, and Energy and Climate issues.

In this workshop we will review graduate language requirements and the best ways for you to prepare to demonstrate the
required proficiency. We’ll specifically discussing what is entailed by the required proficiency examination and how to tailor
your prep efforts. We will then utilize a standardized instrument so you can individually determine your foreign language
experience and capabilities and have a clear idea of where you stand. For those planning on starting a new language or
brushing up on a language you have not revisited for some time, we will discuss strategies specific to language study as
well as the resources available to you at AU.
