NEW SIS Summer Abroad Internship Applications Now Open
Interested in interning abroad for summer 2015?! Take advantage of SIS' relationships with organizations all over the
world to intern through one on SIS' established partnerships. Summer internships can be registered for academic credit
or non-credit and can be used to fulfill the MA Professional Experience requirement. For a list of internship opportunities,
eligibility requirements, and to apply, click here. Applications for summer internship opportunities are completed online
and must be submitted by Friday, March 20.
NEW Economics Placement Exam (March 19-21) Registration
Students wishing to take the SIS economics placement exam to waive the ECON-603 prerequisite to register for SIS-616
International Economics or ECON-661 Survey of Economic Development may now register for the March exam. Some
MA programs may allow students to waive ECON-603 based on other criteria - students should check with their academic
advisor if they have any questions about whether they should take the exam.
The online economics placement exam is offered live and is proctored (students must be on webcam during the test
administration). The exam consists of 50 multiple-choice questions that cover both microeconomic and macroeconomic
principles. Students have 90 minutes to complete the exam. Students may only take the examination once as an SIS
graduate student. A passing score is a 74%. There are four different time options available in March:

Fri, March 20, 9:30-11:00am EST
Fri, March 20, 3:30-5:00pm EST
Sat, March 21, 10-11:30am EST

testing space. This will be the last exam period offered prior to Summer/Fall 2015 Registration opening.
UPDATED Fall and Summer 2015 SIS Practica Applications Now Open - General Info Session TODAY
The SIS practicum is one of the options available to students to fulfill their MA capstone requirement. Descriptions of the
practicum courses being offered for Fall 2015 and the application process can be found
herehttp://www.american.edu/sis/practica/applications.cfm. Descriptions of the summer 2015 practicum courses and
the application process can be found on SISAbroad website. A general information session about fall practica will be held
on Monday, February 16 (5:00-6:15pm, SIS-300) and course-specific information sessions with the fall practicum
professors will be held from February 10-17. Details about the information sessions can be found here. To be eligible to
participate in an SIS practicum, MA students must be in good academic standing and have completed at least 18 credits
of graduate coursework prior to the semester in which they will participate in the practicum. Students are not required to
attend an info session to be eligible to apply. Applications for summer and fall practica are due Sunday, March 1.
UPDATED Applications open for Public International Law & Policy Program (PILPP) 2015-2016 Research
Associates
Would you like to provide legal advice to peace negotiators in Syria, Georgia, or Burma? Are you interested in being
involved with drafting constitutions for states like Kosovo, Iraq, or Montenegro? Would you like to write memos for highlevel foreign government officials and advisors? PILPP offers all of this and more! As a Research Associate in the Public
International Law & Policy Program, you will be involved in cutting edge issues of public international law. Research
Associates gain hands-on experience, researching and drafting documents that have a significant impact on their
clients. In the past, Research Associates have assisted in the drafting of constitutions, human rights legislation, and
cease-fire agreements. PILPP is currently looking for SIS graduate students and first and second-year law students with
an interest in international law and strong writing skills to serve as Research Associates for the 2015-2016 academic
year. Students may email RAHiring@pilpg.org and request an electronic copy of the application or pick up a hard
copy of the application from WCL Room 400. Applications are due at 5pm on February 22. If you have questions
about the application process or about PILPP, please contact Victoria Peters (vpeters@pilpg.org) or Morgan Lee

Advisor Kristin Richards (IPCR, EPGA, IER, IE) no longer at SIS - Interim Advisor Assignments
Per the announcement sent to program listservs, Kristin Richards' last day at SIS was Friday, February 6. Kristin has left
to take a position at Pace University in New York City. Until the Graduate Advising office hires a new advisor, students in
the IPCR, EPGA, IER and IE programs have been assigned an interim advisor. For interim advisor assignments, click

Now Scheduling Advising Appointments
The SIS Graduate Advising office is again scheduling 30 minute student appointments. Unlike Express Advising,
appointments allow for more in-depth advising conversations, including longer-term course/degree planning. We
particularly encourage new students to consider meeting with their advisor. Appointments are available in-person or via
phone or Skype, and can be scheduled by calling 202-885-1690.
Spring 2015 Skills Institutes

Apply to Graduate for Spring 2015
Students planning to complete all degree requirements in the Spring 2015 semester must apply to graduate via their
myAU portal (under Academics – Apply to Graduate). We recommend that you complete the application as soon as
possible (the application takes less than 5 minutes) so that your advisor can begin reviewing your graduation eligibility for
spring.

SIS Industry Days: Department of Energy

SIS, the AU Alumni Association, the SIS Alumni Chapter, the SIS Graduate Student Council, and the AU Career Center
invite SIS graduate students and alumni to an SIS Industry Days event at the Department of Energy. This event will be
hosted on site at the Department of Energy and will feature a panel discussion with SIS alumni currently working at the
agency. Details for this event, including arrival instructions, security requirements, and AU alumni panelists, will be
