NEW Economics Placement Exam (July 9-11) Registration
Students wishing to take the SIS economics placement exam to waive the ECON-603 prerequisite to register for SIS-616
International Economics or ECON-661 Survey of Economic Development may now register for the July exam. Some MA
programs may allow students to waive ECON-603 based on other criteria - students should check with their academic
advisor if they have any questions about whether they should take the exam.
The online economics placement exam is offered live and is proctored (students must be on webcam during the test
administration). The exam consists of 50 multiple-choice questions that cover both microeconomic and macroeconomic
principles. Students have 90 minutes to complete the exam. Students may only take the examination once as an SIS
graduate student. A passing score is a 74%. There are three different time options available in July:
Thurs, July 9, 3:00-4:30pm EST
Fri, July 10, 9:30-11am EST
Sat, July 11, 10:00-11:30am EST
Please click here to register for the exam. The registration deadline is Thursday, July 2. After registering, you will
receive information about how to access the online testing space. This is the last exam period prior to the Fall 2015
semester beginning.
NEW Part-Time Job Opportunities for Students with Prof. Jessica Trisko Darden
Prof. Trisko Darden is seeking to fill the following two immediate part-time positions. Interested individuals should email
Prof. Trikso Darden at trisko@american.edu with a resume and brief description of their qualifications.
1) Someone to work part time as a member of a research team gathering data on women's participation in national
militaries. Preference given to individuals who can read Arabic or any Asian language. The position would pay $13/hour
and be based on campus.
2) A graduate student for help with grant writing. Prior experience working on grant writing or a very high level of
academic English is required. The salary is negotiable based on experience.
NEW Part-Time Job Opportunity for Graduate Students - CTRL
The Center for Teaching, Research and Learning at American University currently has a part-time job opening as Event
Coordinator and Advanced Learning Technologies Consultant in the Teaching and Learning Resources Office,
starting in the summer of 2015. The position will be open until filled, and graduate students - whether currently enrolled or
admitted for the fall - are strongly encouraged to apply. A two year commitment is preferred, and a flier with more

REGISTRATION CLOSES FRIDAY Summer Tool of Research Exam Dates (June 22-June 26)
Students planning to take the free Tool of Research exam to fulfill the SIS MA language requirement should be aware
that there will only be one exam period offered during the summer 2015 semester from June 22-June 26, 2015.

Additional Methods Courses - Program Evaluation and International Policy Analysis- added for Fall 2015
Two additional methodology courses have been added to the fall 2015 Schedule of Classes: a second section of
International Policy Analysis (SIS-750-002; in addition to SIS-750-001 Int'l Policy Analysis) and a second section of
Program Evaluation (SIS-750-003; in addition to SIS-635-002 Program Design, Monitoring and Evaluation). These
courses are available for registration now via your myAU Portal. For a list of approved methods courses by MA program,
please visit the SIS Graduate Advising website.
Non-credit internships and the SIS Professional Experience Requirement
Students completing an internship this summer to fulfill the SIS MA Professional Experience requirement must
register the internship. Internships can be registered either for non-credit (no tuition charge, only fulfills the Professional
Experience requirement) or for academic credit (tuition charges apply, may fulfill the Elective requirement in addition to
the Professional Experience requirement). For more information about the SIS Professional Experience requirement visit

Summer and Fall 2015 Skills Institutes

Summer 2015 Graduate Language Audits
AU graduate students are permitted to audit foreign language courses taught at AU for a substantially discounted rate in
order to support their development of research skills related to their chosen program of study. Audits earn no academic
credit and may not be used as a substitute for the Tool of Research examination or to fulfil any degree requirement.
Interested students should consult the language audit website for more information, including fees and registration
instructions. Registrations require instructor permission.
Summer Financial Aid Application
Students registering for at least 2 credits for the summer 2015 session are eligible to apply for financial aid for summer.
The AU Summer Aid Application is available now on the Financial Aid website. Students are recommended to submit
the application as soon as they have registered for summer.

The SIS Graduate Advising office is again scheduling 30 minute student appointments. Unlike Express Advising,
appointments allow for more in-depth advising conversations, including longer-term course/degree planning.
