In order to be eligible to apply, students must be graduating in December 2015 (or have graduated in August 2015) and have a competitive GPA. If you would like to be considered as the graduate student speaker, please send a short statement explaining why you should be selected, a current resume and a one page outline of your proposed speech to andrew@american.edu no later than 5PM on Friday, October 16. Students who plan to complete all of their degree requirements this semester, but who have not yet applied to graduate, should do so ASAP by following the instructions below. DEADLINE SOON Spring 2016 Practicum Applications Due October 4 The SIS practicum is one of the options available to students to fulfill their MA Capstone requirement. Descriptions of the practicum courses being offered for Spring 2016 and information about the application process and eligibility requirements can be found on the SIS Practicum website. Dates and times for course-specific information sessions with the practicum professors, which will be held through September 30, can be found on the SIS Practicum website. Students are not required to attend an info session to be eligible to apply. Applications are due Sunday, October 4. DEADLINE SOON Economics Placement Exam (October 8-10) Registration Students wishing to take the SIS economics placement exam to waive the ECON-603 prerequisite to register for SIS-616 International Economics, SIS-620 Intro. to Environmental Economics, SIS-635 Intro. to Economic Development, or other economics courses may now register for the next available exam in October. Some MA programs may allow students to waive ECON-603 based on other criteria, so students should check with their academic advisor if they have any questions about whether they should take the exam. The online economics placement exam is offered live and is proctored (students must be on webcam during the test administration). The exam consists of 50 multiplechoice questions that cover both microeconomic and macroeconomic principles. Students have 90 minutes to complete the exam. Students may only take the examination once as an SIS graduate student. A passing score is a 74%. There are three different time options available in October: Thurs, Oct 8: 5:30-7:30pm EDT Fri, Oct 9: 9:30-11am EDT Sat, Oct 10: 10-11:30am EDT Please click here to register for the exam. The registration deadline is Thursday, October 1. After registering, you will receive information about how to access the online testing space. This is the only exam period that will be offered prior to the start of Spring 2016 registration. The next exam period will be in November. Now Scheduling Advising Appointments The SIS Graduate Advising office is now scheduling 30 minute student appointments for students who want to get a head-start on long-term planning. Unlike Express Advising, appointments allow for more in-depth advising conversations, including longer-term course/degree planning. We particularly encourage new students who have not yet had an advising appointment to consider meeting with their advisor. Appointments are available in-person or via phone or Skype and are booked at: https://sisgraduateadvising.youcanbook.me/. Apply to Graduate for Fall 2015 Students planning to complete all degree requirements in the Fall 2015 semester must apply to graduate via their myAU portal (under Academics – Apply to Graduate). We recommend that you complete the application ASAP (the application takes less than 5 minutes) if you plan to graduate in fall.
