Grad Advising News and Announcements
NEW Spring NEW STUDENT Registration Instructions
Graduate Advising welcomes new graduate students! Registration instructions,
including first semester course suggestions, for new students can be found here. New students should also save the date for Spring Orientation, Thursday,
January 7. DEADLINE SOON MA Task Force Student Survey
SIS MA students have the opportunity to contribute to the work of the SIS MA Task
Force by completing the MA Task Force Student Survey. We strongly encourage
students to use this as a confidential way to speak out about their experience
at SIS. Additionally, at the end of the survey, students will be able to indicate their
interest in participating in graduate student focus groups. Students who complete the
survey will have the option to be entered into a raffle for an appreciation gift.
Students can access the survey until Sunday, November 29 at:
https://american.co1.qualtrics.com/SE/?SID=SV_a8EgJmHHvKQshpP. For more information, click here.
Boren Fellowship
The Boren Fellowship provides funding for the study of world regions and languages
critical to U.S. interests. Awards are made for a minimum of 12 weeks, and
preference will be given to applicants proposing overseas programs of 6 months or
longer. Grantees receive up to $30,000. A typical proposal would include summer
intensive language study in the U.S. followed by an international component
consisting of language training and an internship for an NGO, but applicants have
broad flexibility to design their own activities. First-year and second-year graduate
students are eligible to apply. In exchange for funding, Boren Fellows commit to
working in the federal government for at least one year after graduation. The
application deadline for the Boren Fellowship is January 28, 2016, and autumn is
the appropriate time to think about applying.
The Office of Merit Awards maintains an extensive Blackboard site with tips on
applying, and also offers individual and group advising sessions for this fellowship.
Email meritawards@american.edu to be added to the Blackboard site or for
additional information.
Now Scheduling Advising Appointments
The SIS Graduate Advising office is now scheduling 30 minute student appointments
for students who want to discuss long-term planning. Mike Rosenberger is
back from paternity leave and has resumed meeting with students in
the GGPS/IP, EPGA and PhD programs. Unlike Express Advising,
appointments allow for more in-depth advising conversations, including longer-term
course/degree planning. We particularly encourage new students who have not yet
had an advising appointment to consider meeting with their advisor. Appointments are available in-person or via phone or Skype and are
booked at: https://sisgraduateadvising.youcanbook.me/. Spring 2016 Skills Institutes
For an master list of all weekend skills institutes being offered next spring semester
