AP PHYSICS 1
Course Content :
Students explore principles of Newtonian mechanics (including rotational motion); work, energy, and power; mechanical waves and sound; and introductory, simple circuits.
Big Ideas:
Objects and systems have properties such as mass and charge. Systems may have internal structure.
Fields existing in space can be used to explain interactions.
The interactions of an object with other objects can be described by forces.
Interactions between systems can result in changes in those systems.
Changes that occur as a result of interactions are constrained by conservation laws.
Waves can transfer energy and momentum from one location to another without the permanent transfer of mass and serve as a mathematical model for the description of other phenomena.
Science Practices:
Use representations and models to communicate scientific phenomena and solve scientific problems.
Use mathematics appropriately.
Engage in scientific questioning to extend thinking or to guide investigations within the context of the
AP course.
Plan and implement data collection strategies in relation to a particular scientific question.
Perform data analysis and evaluation of evidence.
Work with scientific explanations and theories.
Connect and relate knowledge across various scales, concepts, and representations in and across domains.
AP test:
All students are expected to take the AP Physics 1 test given in the afternoon on Wednesday, May 4th,
2016.
CLASSROOM RULES:
1.
Be in your seat and prepared for class when the bell stops ringing.
2.
Stay in your seat until the bell rings and do not “clean up” early.
3.
Do the work assigned when it is assigned.
4.
Do NOT read, write, study, or work on any outside materials or other subjects during class.
5.
Do NOT eat, chew on, or drink anything besides water in this classroom.
6.
Do NOT apply makeup, lip gloss, chapstick, lotion, etc. in this classroom.
7.
Do NOT talk while anyone is addressing the class.
8.
Do NOT put your head down or sleep during class.
9.
Do NOT use, have visible, or have turned on any electronic devices (other than calculators) in this classroom.
10.
Do NOT hinder other students from their work.
11.
Know and obey all the rules in the La Quinta Parent-Student Handbook.
12.
Have notebook, paper, calculator, writing utensils on your desk at the beginning of class.
13.
Have no other materials on your desk, chair, or lap. As much as possible, keep your hands on top of your desk.
GRADING POLICY:
All graded work will be given a point value. Grades will be determined by dividing the total number of points earned by the total number of points possible. All work must be done in pencil unless otherwise instructed.
The grading scale will be set to indicate the score that I believe you will receive on the AP test.

CLASSWORK/HOMEWORK is due at the beginning of the next class. The assignment will either be collected or a short quiz based on the classwork/homework will be given. (3pts. each)
2.
LABS will be periodically performed in class. Unless otherwise told, lab reports are due the day after the labs are completed. Unsafe or inappropriate behavior during a lab will result in a loss of points.
Some labs may not be graded. (5pts. - 20 pts. each)
3.
BIWEEKLY QUIZZES will be given on Fridays and will focus on lessons since the previous quiz but may include other material especially the most missed concepts from the previous quiz. (40pts. –
130 pts. each)
4.
QUARTER FINALS will be given at the end of each quarter and will be cumulative. (200 pts.)
5.
AP PREP TEST will be given Thursday, April 21 st
, and Friday, April 22 nd
, 2016. (400 pts.)
NOTE: At the semester, grades will align to the district guidelines of 10% or less homework, 40% or less formative assessments, 60% or more summative assessments.
MAKEUP POLICY:
Makeups are YOUR responsibility. The teacher will NOT remind you of any missing work.
1.
CLASSWORK/HOMEWORK assigned while you absent is due within one week of the first day you return. Previously assigned work that was due on a day you were absent is due the day you return. In either case, write “ABSENT” at the top of the paper and give it to the teacher before class starts.
2.
QUIZZES will be made up during class without any previous notice or by having the quarter final count for the missed quiz.
3.
LABS will be made up before or after school on a day arranged with the teacher before the end of the current quarter.
TUTORING:
Tutoring hours with the teacher will be posted every Monday for the week, but generally, they will be 7:30 – 7:50 Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday.
