ICT), cross-curricular teaching • Primary Languages programme • Support for placements • Developing awareness of trainees’ professional development (including setting personal targets for successful progression) • 2 Masters level assignments (2x30 CATs) m:/SRA/Talks/eysprimoverview Subject/Phase Specialism • • • • New for 2012-13 Generalist Training + Specialism Primary: English, Maths, MFL and Science Early Years : EY • Aim: to gain an understanding of how schools design, organise and deliver a programme of high quality teaching and learning in specialist areas School-based element • 120 days – range of placements • 3 placements arranged by the University Placement Length Phase Early Years PP1 (home) 1 week Primary FS, KS1, KS2 KS1, KS2, KS3 PP2 6 weeks Nursery KS1 or KS2 PP3 7 weeks KS1 KS1 or KS2 PP4 9 weeks Reception KS1 or KS2 • 2 year route also available (Primary) m:/SRA/Talks/eysprimoverview Payments to schools Per trainee: PP2 - £370 PP3 - £370 PP3 – 2 year course (3 full days) - £400 PP4 - £530 • Formula for calculating payment for mid-placement withdrawals (e.g. PP2 £60 per week or part week completed). • Further details in the ‘Primary Partnership Commitments’ document in the offers pack m:/SRA/Talks/eysprimoverview Placement Preparation • Class teacher briefings • Preparation days • Organisation of timetables m:/SRA/Talks/eysprimoverview Mentoring at Warwick • Weekly mentor meeting – to discuss observations, teaching file, meeting log • Lesson observations – targets linked to the Standards • Placement guides • Week by week guidance • Checklists • PPPR • Profiles • Warwick assessment descriptors Practicalities • Mentor file • Placing trainees in school (good role model; sufficient experience; keen to support...) • Liaison between mentor and class teacher • Joint observations: mentor and CT, mentor and LT • Arranging for trainee to observe good practice • School-based tasks m:/SRA/Talks/eysprimoverview Roles: the school Mentor • Manages training in school • Monitors the trainee’s individual targets during weekly meetings • Maintains direct contact with Link Tutor/SPO and raises any concerns with them during placement as soon as necessary • Is responsible for final assessment of the trainee’s progress • Checks the trainee’s planning and assessment file • Arranges weekly observation (as a minimum) with written feedback. This may include observation by the class teacher or co-ordinators. • Arrange observation of teaching of phonics (if in KS1/EY) Roles: School Mentor- prep days The school mentor will: • Welcome the trainee to the school • Introduce the trainee to key people • Arrange for a tour of school and discuss resources including ICT • Offer the trainee a school prospectus and key policies • Discuss daily school “rules” e.g. photocopying, staffroom etc. • Discuss the trainee’s training plan and targets • Arrange the first observation and/or first mentor meeting The Mentor will also: • Organise observations throughout the school to meet trainee’s needs/targets • Liaise with class teacher and file feedback from other staff in school, as evidence of performance • Maintain a Mentor Training file and share this with the Link Tutor • Use Warwick descriptors formatively throughout placement to promote trainee’s progress • Conduct a joint observation with the Link Tutor and fill in the interim profile with the link tutor • If necessary, be prepared to mediate between trainee and class teacher Discussion How do you see this role in your school?
