The Fluid Dynamics of Bloodstain Pattern Formation Training Course THE FLUID DYNAMICS OF BLOODSTAIN PATTERN FORMATION To assist bloodstain pattern analysts in understanding and articulating the science of bloodstain pattern formation, a 40 hour course entitled ‘The Fluid Dynamics of Bloodstain Pattern Formation’ has been developed. This course is designed to deliver advanced level training to experienced laboratory based scientists, crime scene investigators and forensic consultants. AN ADVANCED COURSE August 22-26, 2016 Participants on the course develop an understanding of the principles of fluid dynamics as they apply to bloodstain pattern formation. The emphasis of this course is on the relationship between the dynamics of bloodstain pattern formation and the characteristics of the resultant static bloodstain pattern. The course introduces participants to some of the basic concepts of fluid dynamics, with particular reference to the behavior of blood as a fluid. The course has a strong practical component with participants performing a number of experiments which feature the use of a high speed digital camera. He has worked as a fluid dynamicist for the UK Ministry of Defence. He was a Senior Lecturer at Cranfield University (UK) and currently teaches fluid dynamics and thermodynamics at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Canterbury, New Zealand. He has a research group actively studying the mechanics of bloodstain formation and wounding, biological fluid flows in breathing and circulation, and geothermal power. Ms. Rosalyn Rough Rosalyn is a Forensic Senior Scientist at ESR, New Zealand’s primary provider of forensic services to the New Zealand Police. She has been employed there for over 14 years, during which time her duties have included crime scene examination, bloodstain pattern analysis, shoeprint comparisons, screening of clothing for body fluids and assessment of clothing damage. She completed her first (basic) bloodstain pattern analysis training course in 2003 and has subsequently frequently given evidence on bloodstain patterns in criminal trials in New Zealand. Training Objectives On completion of this course, you will be able to: • describe and explain the critical physical properties of fluids • describe and demonstrate the differences between blood and other common fluids and how that relates to Bloodstain Pattern Analysis • explain the underlying physical mechanisms of the formation of major bloodstain types • relate the observed characteristics of the major bloodstain pattern types to the underlying mechanisms of their formation • use video bloodstain pattern analysis source material in the presentation of court evidence or in basic BPA course instruction Contacts Sam Del Rosario Program Director Northeast Forensic Training Center 610-332-6596 sdelrosario@northampton.edu LeeAnn Singley Course Coordinator Grayson Singley Associates, LLC 717-554-3739 lsingleygsa@msn.com Ms. Rosalyn Rough Course Instructor, ESR rosalyn.rough@esr.cri.nz Dr. Mark Jermy Course Instructor University of Canterbury mark.jermy@canterbury.ac.nz Course Details Course hours: Mon. - Thurs.: 8:00 am — 5:30 pm Fri.: 8:00 am — 4:00 pm Location: Northeast Forensic Training Center Fowler Family Southside Center 511 E.
