Introduction to Study Abroad: San Salvador, El Salvador
Land of Volcanoes and the Capital City: Culture, History, and Archeology
7 week hybrid course with a 1 week in country visit during Winter Break; January 9 - 16, 2016
This seven week hybrid course includes online
asynchronous sessions, live - in person class sessions
and a one week in country visit takes students to El
Salvador. Students will live in hostels where they will
study the history and culture of San Salvador, El
Salvador. El Salvador is the smallest and most densely
populated country in Central America but is the fourth
largest economy in the region. Students will learn
about indigenous society and customs both in the past
and today. Students will explore the city and beaches
and travel on day trips to nearby communities.
San Salvador boasts Gothic and Modernist
Style architecture, but interestingly is home to
several noteworthy structures influenced by
Modern, Googie, and Popluxe (similar in style
to structures in Los Angeles). San Salvador’s
Historic Downtown has been located there
since the 16th century. Unfortunately, only a
few Spanish Colony buildings remain as a result
of severe earthquakes, however, Conservation
and restoration efforts have been enacted and
have preserved and restored several building
that were erected in the 19th century. The
National
Palace,
National
Theater,
Metropolitan Cathedral, Parks, and museums
are just a few of the locations where students
can actively engage in authentic conversations
with El Salvadoreans. This is a trip that is not
to be missed!
