ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP FUNDS
JOHN F. "BUDDY" MANER CHANCELLOR'S BARRISTER
FELLOWSHIP--Endowment established by Wayne A. Reaud ('74) of
Beaumont, and matched by the University, to honor the memory of his friend,
John F. "Buddy" Maner, long-time Lubbock attorney.
AL VIN R. ALLISON SCHOLARSHIP--A scholarship endowed by
Levelland attorney, the late Alvin R. Allison, who is affectionately known as
"the father of the Texas Tech Law SchooL"
DURWOOD H. BRADLEY SCHOLARSHIPS--Scholarships endowed by
Mrs. Durwood Bradley and friends and relatives in memory of Mr. Bradley,
a prominent Lubbock attorney for many years. The scholarships are awarded
to deserving students.
KENNETH H. BURNS SCHOLARSHIP--Scholarship endowment
established by members of the Victor H. Lindsey Senate of Delta Theta Phi
Law Fraternity to honor their outstanding Houston alumnus, awarded to
students who are members of the national organization, in good academic
standing, and actively involved in the local Senate. Mr. Bums has also been
a generous contributor to this Fund.
R. GUY CARTER SCHOLARSHIPS--By R. Guy and Phyllis G. Carter. This
generous donation, which was matched by the University, provides
scholarships to students. Mr. Carter, the first President of the Texas Trial
Lawyers' Association, has supported Texas Tech School of Law with his
time, energy and gifts.
WILLIAMC. CLARK SCHOLARSHIPS--Endowed by Mrs. J.C. Clark and
David G. Clark in memory of their son and brother, a Lubbock attorney and
a member of the Texas Tech Class of 1942. These scholarships are awarded
to second- or third-year students.
COLEMAN-HALL PRESIDENTIAL SCHOLARSHIPS-Endowed by Thomas G. Hall ('81) of Fort Worth. The scholarships are
named to honor the integrity and ideals of James F. Coleman, Jr., partner in
the Dallas firm of Carrington, Coleman, Sloman & Blumenthal. The
scholarships are awarded to two Austin College graduates nominated by the
President of Austin College.
CRENSHA W MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP--A scholarship in memory of
Mr. & Mrs. Charles C. Crenshaw, Sr. Mr. Crenshaw was a partner in the
Lubbock firm of Crenshaw, Dupree & Milam from 1926 until his death in
1964. T~e fund is endowed by members of the Crenshaw family and
scholarshIp awards are based on financial need and academic achievement.
FACULTY OPPORTUNITY SCHOLARSHIP--A scholarship endowment
established by the faculty of the Texas Tech School of Law. The scholarship
is awarded to a currently enrolled student.
FIRST GRADUATING CLASS SCHOLARSHIP--A scholarship endowed
through contributions by members of the first Texas Tech graduating law
class of 1969-70.
TOM & LISA HALL SCHOLARSHIP--A scholarship endowment
established by Tom (' 81) and Lisa Hall, who desire to make it possible for
students to nurture a love for individual liberties and pursue justice through
the litigation process.
ROBERT GUY CARTER SCHOLARSHIP--Endowed by partners of the
Dallas law firm of Carter, Jones, Magee, Rudberg & Mayes, in honor of
Robert Guy Carter who founded the firm and who has been a longtime
supporter of Texas Tech University and the Law School. These scholarships
are awarded to worthy students who are in need of financial assistance.
DR. ARTHUR G. HANSEN SCHOLARSHIP--A scholarship endowment
established from proceeds of a settlement of a lawsuit involving Dr. Hansen,
former Chancellor of Texas A&M University. Hansen's attorney, W.
Stephen Rodgers ('79) ofCarperton, Rodgers & Miller, Bryan, Texas, placed
a wager with Hansen that Rodgers' fee, upon favorable verdict, would be
~sed to endow a scholarship at the Texas Tech Law School. The scholarship
IS awarded to a second- or third-year student.

RICHARD W. HEMINGWAY PRESIDENTIAL SCHOLARSHIP-A
scholarship endowed by friends and students of former Professor and Interim
Dean Hemingway.
JUNELL FAMIL Y PRESIDENTIAL SCHOLARSHIPS--The scholarships
are endowed by the families of Frank Junell, civic leader and longtime
supporter of higher education in Texas, State Representative Robert Junell
('77) and Dan Junell ('85). The scholarships are awarded to graduates of
Angelo State University nominated by the President of Angelo State
University.
GEORGE H. MAHON FELLOWSHIPS--A scholarship grant endowed by
the Litton Foundation in honor of Mr. Mahon, the distinguished former
Congressman from Lubbock. These fellowships are awarded to worthy
recipients in any class.
OWEN W. McWHORTER ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP--Created to honor
Owen W. McWhorter by the Lubbock law firm of McWhorter, Cobb &
Johnson, the scholarship is awarded annually to a deserving second- or thirdyear student.
OWEN McWHORTER TUITION SCHOLARSHIP--A scholarship
endowment established by Mr. & Mrs. Ray 1. Diekemper, Jr. to honor
Lubbock attorney Owen W. McWhorter. The recipients are encouraged to
adhere to the high ethical standards set by Mr. McWhorter.
JOE H. NAGY SCHOLARSHIP--A scholarship endowed by his wife and
children in honor of Lubbock attorney Joe H. Nagy, former President ofthe
State Bar of Texas.
G. HOBERT AND AILEEN HACKNEY NELSON SCHOLARSHIP FUND-A scholarship grant endowed by longtime Lubbock resident Mrs. Nelson,
the late Mr. Nelson and their children. The scholarships are awarded
annually to second- or third-year students.
W. REED QUILLIAM, JR. ENDOWED PRESIDENTIAL SCHOLARSHIP-Presented by Phil ('71) and Ruth Adams and friends.
RUNGE/HOWARD SCHOLARSHIPS--Scholarship honoring the late Judge
Bob Robertson endowed by Houston attorney and Law School Foundation
President Barbara K. Runge and her husband, Rusty Howard.
W.F. SHIVER SCHOLARSHIP--A scholarship established in honor of W.F.
Shiver, Superintendent of Post schools. The fund is endowed by Judge David
E. and Larissa Shiver Keltner ('86) of Fort Worth.
EDWARD R. AND JO ANNE M. SMITH SCHOLARSHIP--A scholarship
presented by Lubbock attorney Edward R. Smith and his wife, Jo Anne. The
scholarship is awarded to a deserving student in any class.
JOHN H. SPLAWN, JR. ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP--A scholarship
established in honor of trial attorney Johnny Splawn who practiced law in
Lubbock from 1952 until his death in 1988. The fund is endowed by
Splawn's law partner, John Simpson ('74) and his wife, Carolyn Simpson.
CURT F. STEIB, JR. MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP--A scholarship
awarded annually to a student in financial need in memory of Curt Steib, Jr.,
a member of the Class of 1977. The grant is endowed by his family,
classmates, and friends.
TEXAS TECH LAW SCHOOL FREEDOM SCHOLARSHIPS-- A
scholarship fund created to assist students who have overcome serious social,
economic, educational or physical handicap in attaining a legal education.
W.D. WILSON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP--A scholarship awarded
annually by the children of the late Lubbock attorney, W.D. Wilson, and
presented through the Ex-Students' Association.

PHELAN PRESIDENTIAL SCHOLARSHIPS--Endowed by Judge Robert
Bean Professor Marilyn E. Phelan and her husband, Harold, an attorney in
Levelland. The scholarships are awarded to two Lubbock Christian Univ.
graduates nominated by the President of Lubbock Christian University.
JUSTICE JAMES G. DENTON SCHOLARSHIP--Established by the Denver
City law firm of New and New, the scholarship is awarded in memory of
Justice Denton's service on the Texas Supreme Court.

Bar Association and friends ofthe late Judge Victor H. Lindsey of the 72nd

MOOT COURT SCHOLARSHIP A WARD--Cash award to a student who
has distinguished himself or herself and brought credit to the School of Law
through participation in intercollegiate moot court competition.
COTTON, BLEDSOE, TIGHE & DA WSON ADVOCACY A WARD--Cash
award to the second-year competitor who accumulates the most competition
points during his or her second year of law school.

CLIFFORD, FIELD, KRIER, MANNING, GREAK & STONE TAXATION
A WARD--Cash award and inscription of name on a permanently displayed
plaque to a third year student for outstanding achievement in taxation.
ESTATE PLANNING A WARD--Cash award to a student who has
distinguished himself or herself in the area of estate planning, either by
performance in course work or by the preparation of an outstanding paper
from the Maddox Law Firm of Hobbs, New Mexico.
FORTNEY A WARD FOR ETHICS--In honor of Professor Susan Fortney,
this award is given to the law student who exhibits outstanding moral and
ethical conduct among his or her peers while attending law school. The
recipient is selected from nominations submitted by the law school body;
presented by Russell Devenport and Lincoln Goodwin of the Class of 1998.
HINKLE, COX, EATON, COFFIELD & HENSLEY OIL AND GAS
A WARD--Cash award to the student achieving the highest grade in a section
of oil and gas law from the Midland, Amarillo, Roswell & Santa Fe law firm.
ABA-BNA--Award for Excellence in the Study of Labor and Employment
Law -- certificate to be presented to the student with the highest grade in a
basic labor-employment law course.
JOHN E. KRAHMER A WARD--A cash award to the student who, in the
opinion of Professor Krahmer, through classroom work or otherwise, has
demonstrated outstanding ability in the field of Commercial Law, presented
by Al Watkins (' 86) of Dallas and Karl Vancil (' 88) of San Angelo.
WILLIAM R. MOSS TRIAL ADVOCACY A WARD--Cash award to the
student who has demonstrated outstanding accomplishments in a trial
advocacy course.
FRANK R. MURRAY A WARD--Cash award and inscription of name on a
permanently displayed plaque to the student achieving the highest grade in
the Creditors' Rights Course. The award is sponsored by the West Texas
Bankruptcy Bar Association in memory of the former United States
Bankruptcy Judge seated in the Lubbock Division.

Member who has worked the most with the talent he or she has been given
to bring honor to the law school; presented by Anna Kingsley, Kenneth

whose propensity to survive in law school by dogged persistence or agility
to adapt to adversity, ability or disability, or sheer force of personality or
charisma, appeals to the admiration of the faculty, presented by the late Judge

Martin W. Dies is a 1974 graduate of the Texas
Tech University School of Law and he holds a B.A.
from the University of Texas at Austin. He began
his legal career as an associate, later becoming a partner, in the law firm of Stephenson,
Thompson & Dies, of Orange, Texas. Since 1984 he has been a partner in the law firm of
Dies & Hile, L.L.P., which has offices in Orange and Austin, Texas.
Martin Dies is a lawyer's lawyer; he tries the most complex and difficult cases heard in the
courts ofthe United States. He is admitted to practice before the United States Supreme
Court, the United States Court of Appeals for the 5th and 11 th Circuits and to the United
States District Court in the Eastern and Southern District of Texas as well as the United
States District Court for the Western District of Louisiana. His work in complex litigation
has led to his appointment as Chair of the Trustee Advisory Committee for the National
Gypsum Company Trust Facility, to the Board of Directors ofthe Austin Company of
Cleveland, Ohio, and to the Property Damage Advisory Committee of the Celotex Asbestos
Property Damage Trust Facility. He has served as Co-Chair ofthe Official Committee of
Asbestos Claimants of the National Gypsum Company Bankruptcy Proceedings.
Notwithstanding his deep involvement at the national level in major complex litigation, he
has also found time to serve as Chair of the Labor and Employment Law Section ofthe State
Bar of Texas and was a Founding Member and Advisory Trustee of the John Gray Institute
of Lamar University. These contributions to the State Bar of Texas and to our state
university system build on Martin Dies' national connections and the experience that comes
with being a primary litigator in many ofthe most important cases of this Century.
Martin Dies specializes in construction and environmental-related class action litigation. He
is a recognized expert in the field of asbestos property damage cost recovery, having filed
the first such case in the country in 1981. In a later case, he filed suit on behalf of a public
university and recovered the first punitive damage award in the history ofthe litigation. He
has represented States Attorney Generals and numerous governmental entities in several
states in similar litigation. He is currently serving as Special Deputy Attorney General for
the States of Hawaii and Utah and is also counsel for the class of Texas political
subdivisions consisting of counties, cities, public school districts and public universities in
similar cases.
Only the best lawyers are selected to work on important cases. When those important cases
are also complex, many great lawyers are involved. To be selected out of this elite group to
