A BSTRAC T
F reshly-hatched A rtem ia n a uplii f r o m various geographical sources survived
storage in a refrigerator (2 -4 ° C ) a t densities o f 2 0 0 0 p e r m l a n d above.
E x c e p t f o r A rtem ia fr o m C haplin L a k e a n d B u en o s A ires, naupliar viability
was very high even a fte r 4 8 h storage, a n d d id n o t decrease significantly
a fte r a 2 4 h post-storage transfer to 25°C. N e ith e r th e naupliar d ry w eight
n o r bioch em ica l c o m p o sitio n changed significantly d uring refrigeration fo r
m o s t strains tested. C om parative culture-tests w ith sto re d a n d fresh lyh a tc h e d nauplii as f o o d f o r ju ve n ile m arine m y sid s M ysidopsis bahia M.
a n d larval carp C yprinus carp io L. revealed sim ilar p ro d u c tio n p e r fo r m ­
ances.
IN T R O D U C T IO N
A rte m ia is a p rac tica l and su ita b le larva food fo r b o th m arin e and fresh­
w a te r cru stacean s and fishes (K in n e, 1977). B rine sh rim p are c o m m o n ly
used as fre sh ly -h atc h ed n au p lii, b ecause o ld e r u n fe d n au p lii lose th e ir
n u tritio n a l value (M orris, 19 5 6 ; M addox and M anzi, 1976; W atanabe

ml se aw ater, and tra n sfe rre d to c y lin d ro -c o n ica l vessels (1 5 0 m lc o n te n t) .
These w ere p laced in a (th e rm o s ta tic ) re frig e ra to r (2 -4 °C ) an d c o n ­
sta n tly a e ra te d . T h e p erc en ta g e survival o f n a u p lii w as ca lc u lated by
subsam pling fro m a u n ifo rm suspen sio n w ith an a u to m a tic m ic ro p ip e tte
afte r 2 4 h and 48 h. E x tr a su bsam ples o f a few stra in s w ere rem o v ed
and held fo r 2 4 h a t 25°C in p e tri dishes a f te r w h ich tim e survival o f th e
nauplii w as d e te rm in e d . T he in star-stag es w ere d e te rm in e d a c c o rd in g to
H entschel (1 9 6 8 ).
D ry-w eight analyses w ere p erfo rm e d b y th e p ro c e d u re o f V an h a ec k e
and S orgeloos ( 1 9 8 0 ), a n d d e te rm in a tio n s o f to ta l lipid w ere carried
o u t acco rd in g to th e m e th o d o f S c h a u e r and S im p so n (1 9 7 8 ). S ep ara­
tion o f f a tty acid m e th y l e sters w as p erfo rm e d b y gas c h ro m a to g ra p h y
on a glass co lu m n ( l - 8 0 m X 2 m m I.D .) p ack ed w ith 10% A lte c h CS-8

R E S U L T S A N D D ISC U SSIO N
F o r m o s t A r te m ia stra in s te s te d , sto rag e o f n a u p lii in d en sitie s u p to
80 0 0 p er m l a t 2 -4 °C d id n o t sig n ific an tly ( P > 0 - 0 5 ) a ffe c t th e ir
survival (T a b le 1). T h e h ig h m o rta lity ra te s fo u n d fo r C h a p lin L ak e and
B uenos A ires A r te m ia c o n firm ea rlier finding s th a t n a u p lii fro m th e

sam e strain s do n o t survive w ell at 20°C an d 3 0°C ; th is ap p e ars to be
c o rre la te d w ith lo w er ca lo ric c o n te n ts o f th e n a u p lii o f th e se tw o
strain s (V a n h aeck e e t al., 1 9 8 2 ).
A fte r 48 h sto rag e , th e n a u p lii w ere still a t th e in sta r I stage. U pon
tra n s fe r to 2 5 °C th e ir m e ta b o lism w as e n h a n c e d an d m o ltin g in to instar
II a n d III stages o c c u rre d , a p p a re n tly w ith o u t an y sig n ifican t ( P > 0-05)
e ffe c t o n th e ir survival (T a b le 2 ).
A fte r 2 4 h o f storage a t 2 -4 °C , th e n a u p lia r d ry -w eig h t losses were
in sig n ifica n t ( P > 0 * 0 5 ) . A fte r 48 h sto rag e , th e d iffe re n c e s w ere still
v ery sm all as co m p ared w ith th e d ry w eight losses a f te r 24 h a t 25°C
(T a b le 3).
A s co m p ared to a 26% d ec rease in to ta l lipid c o n te n t w hen k e p t at
25°C fo r 2 4 h (B enijts et al., 19 7 6 ), A rte m ia n a u p lii a p p a re n tly did
n o t m e ta b o liz e th e ir lipid reserves w h en sto re d a t 2 -4 ° C , and th e fa tty
acid p a tte rn s w ere n o t sig n ific an tly chan g ed d u rin g cool storage
(T a b le 4).
T h e survival, g ro w th and re p ro d u c tiv e d e v e lo p m e n t o f mysid
ju v e n ile s w ere a t least as goo d w h en fed n a u p lii sto re d fo r 2 4 - 4 8 h as
w h e n fed fre sh ly -h atc h ed A r te m ia n a u p lii (T a b le 5).

w hen fed 48 h sto red n au p lii; a f te r th is long sto rag e, th e n a u p lii had
p robably lost resistan c e to survive th e e x tr a stress c re a te d b y th e
tran sfe r in to fre sh w ate r and died o f f rap id ly . T h e survival o f carp was
n ot affec ted b y storage c o n d itio n s o f th e A rte m ia (T a b le 6).

A rte m ia n au p lii can be sto red fo r 2 4 -4 8 h w ith o u t losing th e ir n u tr i­
tional value fo r fish and cru sta c e a n larvae; d en sitie s u p to 8 0 0 0 n au p lii
per ml can be k e p t in m o d e ra te ly ae rate d c y lin d ro -c o n ica l c o n tain e rs
at a te m p e ra tu re o f 2 -4 °C .
