Programme meetings 1 or 2 per term 8 The MSc Mechanical Engineering Programme: PROGRAMME AIMS: ‘The aims and objectives of this programme are to take well qualified students (those having a good bachelor’s degree, or equivalent, in mechanical engineering or allied subject) and to equip them with skills of analysis and design such that they can be employed as professional engineers in virtually any sector of the mechanical engineering industry’ PROGRAMME PRESENTATION: ‘The programme is presented in two forms: Elements of engineering aimed at increasing the student’s knowledge and understanding and material specifically designed to increase the student’s ability to apply this knowledge in a systematic and functional manner’. 9 Course Structure – MSc Mech Eng Oct Feb Mar Lectures Tutorials Coursework EXAMS – MECH ENG Group Design Exercise Apr May Sep Individual Research Project 5 months starts April EXAM – MANAGEMENT Individual Research Project 5 months ends Sept MSc Course is One year in length and is full time Assessment of Taught elements is By examination and coursework Assessment of the GP and IRP is By Oral Presentation And Thesis 10 Taught Courses: • Five Compulsory Modules MECHGM02 Power Transmission and Auxiliary Systems MECHGM03 Materials and Fatigue MECHGM04 Vibration, Acoustics and Control MECHGM05 Applied Computer Applications in Engineering MSING001 Project Management (UCL Management School) • Optional Elements – one from MECHGM01 Applied Thermodynamics and Turbo-machinery MECHGM06 Heat Transfer and Heat Systems MECHGO20 New and Renewable Energy Systems 11 Taught Modules (15 credits each) • Each student takes 5 compulsory modules and 1 optional module. • Each module is about 30 hours contact plus similar number of hours for self study • Assessment by coursework (35%) and examination (65%) • www.ucl.ac.uk/moodle • www.ucl.ac.uk/timetable 12 Optional Taught Module (15 credits) Select one from MECHGM01 Applied Thermodynamics and Turbo-machinery MECHGM06 Heat Transfer and Heat Systems MECHGO20 New and Renewable Energy Systems • Module descriptions are available on the Dept web pages • Try out first • Must register by end of 2nd week via PORTICO 13 MECHGM91 Group Project (15 credits) • Students formed into Groups of typically six students usually from different programmes • Group Project Starts Term 1 as part-time activity • Continues into Term 2 and ends in Term 3 • Each Project has a sponsor who advises • Project progress is monitored regularly • Administered by Dr S Jayasinghe • Past Projects: – Electrical Hybrid Bus – Offshore thermal energy conversation (OTEC) – Underwater autonomous vehicle (AUV) 14 MECHGM99 Individual Project (75 credits) • • • • • • • 5 months full time April – September Project choices offered in December Students may propose their own projects Students select project Project allocated in February Project progress monitored via Moodle. Assessment by – oral presentation (15%) – written thesis (85%) 15 Other Issues I Access to Dept – 8am until 7pm not at weekends Attendance at UCL – monitored for all students NC if failing to attend lectures Visa violation – by law we have to notify UK Boarder Agency Part time working Discouraged Could cause visa problems The End Not a valid excuse for poor performance 16 Other Issues II Calculators The current models of UCL-approved calculator are: Casio FX83GT+ - battery operated Casio FX85GT+ - solar powered Only approved calculators may be used in an exam If you already own one of the following older, discontinued models of the same calculator, you are still permitted to use it: The End 17 Degree Classifications Distinction: Pass all 1st attempt, no condoned passes 70% overall, 70% in individual project Merit: Pass all 1st attempt, no condoned passes 60% overall, 60% in individual project Pass: Pass all 1st or 2nd attempt, one condoned passes 50% overall, 50% in individual project Fail: Normally no more than 1 or 2 per year.
