LANGUAGE and REGIONAL PREPARATION
If you study in a non-English-speaking country whose language is taught at Smith, you must have one or two year’s
proficiency in that language to receive approval (see "Eligibility" section in the Guidelines or the web for specific
language requirements for each language and program type). To study in Africa, students must prepare with two
courses related to the continent. List the courses you have taken, or will have taken, prior to your study abroad:

STUDY ABROAD ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
For academic credit earned in a term-time study abroad program to count toward the Smith degree, a student
must obtain advance approval from the Office for International Study. Approval is subject to the following
conditions. Smith students must

Have no credit shortage by the time she starts her studies abroad, have a 3.0 overall grade point
average, and be in good standing in student conduct matters (at time of application and at the
time she starts her program);

Have a maximum of 32 transfer credits at the time she starts a year-long program, or 48 transfer
credits at the time she starts a semester-long program (this limit applies to all but the four Smith
JYA programs, on which students earn Smith rather than transfer credit);

Have not previously studied abroad for a semester or more under Smith auspices;

Have declared a major (students considering a self-designed major: see a class dean);

Choose a program approved by Smith (see Approved List; students are expected to attend a
single program abroad for a semester or full year);

Demonstrate required proficiency in host country language if it is taught at Smith (this is a
Smith requirement that is independent of program requirements):

Submit a completed Plan of Study (or Florence, Geneva, Hamburg, or Paris Application) by the
deadline;
Plan to study abroad under Smith auspices (students pay Smith tuition, room, and board fees;
Smith will pay study abroad program)

Complete all participation agreement forms
Other requirements.

At least 64 credits and four semesters must be completed while in residence in Northampton, and two
of the final four semesters before graduation must be spent in residence at Smith in Northampton.

Scholars Program.
