CourseDescription
Languageeducatorstodayhaveattheirdisposalanever-increasingvarietyoftechnologiesthatcan
beharnessedtoincreasestudentmotivationandlearningbothinsideandoutsideofthelanguage
classroom.Inthisclass,studentswillfirstexplorehowapedagogyofmultiliteraciesfacilitates
participatorylanguagelearningandmeaningfuluseofavailabletechnologies.Thestudentswill
lookattechnologiesavailabletothemasL2teachers,understandthechallengesforteachersand
studentsinbothhigh-andlow-technologyteachingcontexts,andwillbecomecriticalconsumersof
commerciallanguagelearningproducts.Next,studentswillexperiencevariousnewmedia
technologies(e.g.,wikis,podcasts,blogs,websites,digitalstories,andgamingamongothers)for
languagelearningandwillthustheorizewhatitmeanstohavedigital/newmedialiteracyinthe
21stcentury.Finally,studentswillplantoteachusingCALL,Internetresources,andnewmedia
technologiesforvariousteachingcontexts.
CourseGoals
Bytheendofthiscourse,studentswillbeableto:
• Explainthedigitaldivide,itsrelevanceforESL/EFLstudents,andhowtoteachinhigh-and
low-technologycontexts
• Defineandcriticallyexaminedigital/newmedialiteracyandmultiliteracies
• RelatecurrentSLAtheoriestoteachingthroughtechnology
• Identifyandcriticallyanalyzesoftware,websites,andothertechnologiesforavarietyof
teachingcontexts
• Evaluatetheusefulnessofsoftware,websites,andothertechnologies
• Explainhowapedagogyofmultiliteraciescanimpactteachingwithtechnology
• Createandimplementlessonplansfollowingapedagogyofmultiliteraciesandutilizinga
varietyoftechnologiestodevelopstudentaccuracy,fluency,andcross-culturalawarenessin
theL2classroom.

Requirements
Attendanceisrequiredandiskeyforcoursesuccess,asisactiveclassparticipation.Youare
requiredtocompleteallassignedreadingsandtasksbeforeclass.Allworkmustbehandedinby
theduedatesestablished;lateworksubmittedbytheendoftheweekoftheduedatereceivesa
gradereductionof10%.Afterthat,lateworkisnotacceptedunlessthereareextraordinary
circumstances.Assignmentshavevaryingduedatesasdescribedbelow.

facilitatorwillmonitortheonlineconversationinordertoensurethatthediscussionisrobust.The
facilitatorwillsummarizethemainlearningpointsoftheonlinediscussioninafinalpostby5:00
p.m.Wednesday.Thissummaryandareflectiononthediscussionandperformanceasadiscussion

EachstudentwillidentifyatechnologicaltoolthatcanbeusedforL2teachingandlearning.
Studentswillexploreandevaluatethetool,andthenteachtheirclassmateshowtouseit
successfullywithL2studentsina15-minutepresentation.Thisshouldtakeaformofanactual
microteaching.Specialemphasisshouldbegiventohowtoteachstudentstousethetechnological
toolandwaysthetoolcanbeusedinavarietyofESL/EFLteachingcontexts.Awrittenone-page
handoutwithhighlightsofthedemonstrationshouldbeprovided.Submitthehandoutand
reflectiononthetoolandyourmicroteachingviaBlackboardon(orbefore)March30by
5:00p.m.IndividualstudentdemonstrationswilltakeplaceeitheronMarch23(GroupA)or
March30(GroupB).

Eachstudentwillproduceadigitalstoryandshareitwiththeclass.Thechoiceofsoftwaretouse
(i.e.iMovie,WindowsMovieMaker,FinalCutExpress/Pro)willbeuptotheindividualstudent.The
digitalstoryisdueonApril13;theviewingwilltakeplaceonApril20.
FinalMultimodalProject&ProjectProposal(15%+5%=20%) April20
StudentswilldevelopamultimodalprojectbasedontheirinterestsinteachingL2withtechnology
oronthegapsintheirknowledgetheywouldliketofill.Theprojectcantakeaformthatismost
interestingandrelevanttoyou.Itshoulddrawonliteratureandcontentofthecourse,anda
pedagogyofmultiliteraciesshouldbeitsmaintheoreticalandpedagogicalframework.Forexample,
theprojectcantakeaformofasmall-scaleresearchstudy/casestudy;ananalyticalpaper;aunit
planthatreliesonapedagogyofmultiliteraciesandinvolvesseveralsmall-scalemultimodal
activities;anin-depthanalysisofmultimodalteachingmaterialsorresources;adetaileddesignof
onelarge-scalemultimodalactivity(e.g.,awiki,classwebsite,blog);adigitalstorytellingproject
integratedinalargerL2curriculum;oranassessmentplanforamultimodalstudentprojectamong
others.Aprojecthastoincludeamultimodalcomponentthatdemonstratesyourunderstandingof
multiliteracies/digitalliteracyandhowtheycanbeincludedinanL2class.Forexample,ifyour
projectincludeshavingyourstudentwriteablog,youshouldsubmitablogmodel.
Whicheverformtheprojecttakes,itshouldclearlydemonstratehowyouapplythecontentcovered
inclass,buildonit,anduseittofurtherexploreapedagogicalapproachthatincludesdevelopment
ofmultiliteracies.Theprojectshouldincludeawrittenreportandamultimodalpart.Thewritten
reportshouldinclude(1)anintroductionofnolongerthanonepagethatexplainstherelevanceof
theprojecttoESL/EFL/L2learning(Why?),it’sfocusandclearlydefinedgoal/purpose;(2)focused
literaturereviewofnolongerthanthreepages(relevantcoursereadingsshouldbeincorporated);
(3)methodology/implementationplanthatexplainshow,when,andwherethisprojectcan/willbe
used;(4)discussion;and(5)conclusion.Ifyouchoosetodesignaunitplanoralarge-scaleactivity,

theunit/activityplanshouldbeinsection3.Ifyouchoosetowriteananalyticalpaper,itshould
haveanintroduction,discussion/analysisthatbringsinrelevantliterature,andconclusion.
Tosupportyouintheprocessofthefinalprojectdevelopmentandwritingandtoprovidefeedback
alongtheway,youwillsubmitaprojectproposalintwostages.
Stage1:Preliminaryproposal.Inone-twopagesyouwilloutlineyourthoughtsandplansforthe
project.Youwillidentifywhattypeofprojectyouwouldliketodoandoutlineit’smain
components.YouwillbringahardcopyofyourpreliminaryproposaltoclassonFebruary3
forpeer-review.YouwillalsosubmityourpreliminaryproposalviaBlackboardby5pmon
February3.
Stage2:Finalprojectproposal.Theprojectproposalshouldincludeanintroduction,complete
