SGA Senate Minutes September 20, 2005 I. Call to Order 7:03 II. Roll Call Senators will not be held accountable for attendance at this meeting. III. Announcements Allison Maranuk – Youth Action International’s first meeting Wednesday September 21st, 7pm Campus Center room 102. Natalie Vernon – Elections for class of 2009 9/17-9/21. Looking for first years to run. IV. Congratulations and Welcome to Senate! Meg Ambrus (SGA VP) – Welcomes/congratulates new senators, gives introduction about Senate (what is it all about). What is our role? Senators represent all members of their house. V. Introductions of SGA Cabinet Members and Non-Voting members Ka’Neda Ellison (President), Kim Paull (Treasurer), Emily Taylor (Cabinet Secretary), Laura Magliochetti (2008 President), Katy Gable (Curriculum Committee Chair), Adriana Rua (Diversity Committee Chair), (Chair of HP Associations) Nkechi Nneji, McKay LeBlanc (2007 President). College Hall Open House – free food, students will become familiar with the building, faculty and staff. 9/28 3:30-4:30. Looking for volunteers to help with publicity – sign up sheet. SGA working on relief for Hurricane Katrina. Blood drive November 17th 6-8pm benefit dinner. Free but asking for donations. Two speakers, history and geology professors. Media clips showing, to raise awareness. Collaborate with Habitat for Humanity. Trip during J-term/Spring Break to Louisiana and affected areas to help clean and build homes. Meg introduces a Hurricane Katrina Committee for Senate. Ka’Neda Ellison makes a speech – Congrats to Senators, Welcome, and Introduction. Speaks on importance of Senate – great way to be involved, know info before anyone else. VI. What is the role of the SGA at Smith? Meg asks questions about SGA and senators answer the questions by reading from fact sheet. Also Senators introduce name and house. What is the purpose of Senate? Who is a member of the SGA? What is the purpose of the SGA? Senators and Meg Ambrus question and answer session. Introduction of Article II of SGA bylaws Summary of Duties and Powers (Section 2). Meg outlines her expectations of the Senators. She will take the rules seriously. 3 absences and a senator will be suspended. 2 absences – warning/probation. Only 2 absences are allowed each semester. Senators should make a senate board, and make announcements to the house. Keep SGA senate papers for future senators, senate binder. VII. The role of Senate in Chartering and Funding Orgs Summary of ORC, representative explains -review/pass charters -review proposed budgets and decide on monetary allotment for each org. Question and Answer session, difference between senate and ORC. Representatives for ORC, Jan Arbaugh Vice Chair of Budgeting and Devin Burke Vice Chair of Chartering. Marissa Maples – Chair of ORC. VIII. The Language of Senate: Parliamentary Procedure Elections next week for different committees. Positions – rules, procedures, curriculum, elections and appointments. IX. Introductions X.
