Language Tools
ITU is implementing new technologies to achieve greater efficiency and productivity; it provides
tools to facilitate the work of translators, authors, editors, etc. as well as an automatic translation
prototype.
ITU style guides
The purpose of ITU style guides (currently available for English, Russian and Spanish) is to
codify the practices that have grown up within ITU in the drafting of ITU texts, including in the
various official languages, in order to facilitate the work of authors, assistants, keyboard
operators, translators, editors and proofreaders, ensure uniformity of documents in ITU and
eliminate unnecessary corrections at each successive stage in the preparation of documents or
publications.
Terminology
The Terminology of Telecommunications Database in the six official languages, Termite 6L , is
the result of more than 30 years of terminology work by the ITU language services, the six
languages being Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish. At present, the terms
are consolidated in 90 000 multilingual concepts, of which some 80 per cent cover more than
three languages and around 30 per cent cover all the six languages.
Search tool
LogiTermWeb from Terminotix is the search tool used at ITU.

Internal Server, accessible only inside ITU or through PCremote, is updated every night.
Log in with your ITU user name (in lowercase).
External Server (access from ITU network), for freelancers working outside ITU (during
the effective dates of their contracts), is updated daily. Contact STRAIT for access.

Machine translation
ITU SMT is a statistical machine translation (SMT) prototype developed in 2012 thanks to a
joint project by ITU and WIPO specialists working on SMT at the Patent Cooperation Treaty
(PCT) unit in Geneva. The tool is based on open source Moses technology, trained on an ITU
extensive corpus of manually translated texts over the last ten years. This corpus is composed of
the whole set of English-French and English-Chinese available bitexts as well as all E, F and
C terminology extracted from Termite.
At present there are two interfaces open to the public:







Gist translation where you can submit short texts and access the corresponding automatic
translation (with highlighting of parallel segments or words) by a single click, then if the
result is good enough to be used, you can edit the raw translation and copy it to your
document. Alternative translation proposals can be seen by clicking on a given segment.
Interactive translation where you can control the order of translation of smaller pieces of
text and get a result to be post edited. With this interface you can drive the translation
process by providing the segments to translate and immediately selecting alternative
proposals.
