Steps for students trying to get into a closed course 1. Ask if there is another section of the class open. If so, have the student rearrange his or her schedule. 2. Have the student get on the waiting list if offered! Departments may use waiting lists for pri- ority when seats become available in a course section as well as to gauge if another section could be opened. Note that not all departments use waiting lists, and each department uses waiting lists differently. Have the student check with the department offering the course regarding their waiting list process. 3. Remind the student to check his or her Student Center regularly. Recommend that the student checks his or her Student Center at least twice per day. Other students will be making changes to their schedules for the student to potentially find an open seat. 4. Have the student go to the instructor or the department office to request into a course section. In some departments it is up to the instructor to decide who to let in; whereas in others, it is the department office that will make these approvals. Employer Perceptions What employers are seeking Recently, the National Association of Colleges and Employers released its 2015 Job Outlook Survey. This information gives advisors insight on what areas students need to gain skills in. It can also be used to begin discussions with students on what skills are needed in today’s workforce and how to make the connection from what is learned in the classroom and preparing for a student’s first job or internship. Study Abroad It Takes More Than a Major HART Research Associates found that employers recognize the importance of liberal arts education. 1) The majority of employers agree that having both field-specific knowledge and skills and a broad range of skills and knowledge is most important for recent college graduates to achieve long-term career success. Few think that having field-specific knowledge and skills alone is what is most needed for individuals’ career success. 2) Eighty percent of employers agree that, regardless of their major, every college student should acquire broad knowledge in the liberal arts and sciences. 3) When read a description of a 21st century liberal education, a large majority of employers recognize its importance; 74% would recommend this kind of education to a young person they know as the best way to prepare for success in today’s global economy.
