Historical or Biographical Note

H.C. Raymond Meng (1917-2002) was an educator and nutritionist. His research interests included parenteral nutrition, lipid metabolism, hypothermia and subcutaneous fat solidification, and fat embolization in trauma.

Dr. Meng was born in Hebei Province, China. He received his education from the following institutions:

M.B., Cheelo University Medical School (China), 1937; M.D., University of Toronto, 1941; M.S., Ph.D.

in Physiology, Northwestern University, 1946 & 1947. He interned and was Assistant Resident in the OB/

Gyn department of the Joint University Hospital in Cheng-Tu, China from 1941-42. He was an instructor in Physiology and Pharmacology at Cheelo University Medical School from 1942-44. Then he was a research fellow and assistant in Physiology at Northwestern University from 1944-47.

Dr. Meng came to Vanderbilt in 1947 and stayed until his retirement in 1988. At VUSM he was an

Instructor in Physiology, 1947-50; an Assistant Professor of Physiology, 1950-54; an Associate Professor of Physiology, 1954-66; a Professor of Molecular Physiology and Biophysics, 1966-88; a Professor of

Surgery, 1976-88; and an Emeritus Professor, 1988-2002.

During his time at Vanderbilt Dr. Meng received several opportunities to work internationally including:

John Simon Guggenheim Fellow, Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, 1960-61; Visiting Professor of Pharmacology, Karolinska Institute, 1967; Visiting Professor, Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, Taipai,

Taiwan, 1979; Visiting Professor, Tri-Service General Hospital, and the National Defense Medical

Center, Taiwan, 1980 and 1984; Consultant, National Science Council, Republic of China (Taiwan),

1980; Visiting Professor, Peking Union Medical College Hospital, Tianjin Medical College, and Si-An

Medical College, China, 1982 and 1985; Consultant, Department of Health, Republic of China (Taiwan),

1986-87; Visiting Professor of Surgery, Veterans General Hospital, Taiwain, 1987-88; and Founder,

Department of Nutrition, China Medical College, Taichung, Taiwan.

Dr. Meng was also the recipient of both the Thomas G. Hull Award for Clinical Studies of Total

Parenteral Nutrition from the American Medical Association in 1970 and the American Chinese Medical

Society Scientific Award for Outstanding Achievement in Medical Education and Research in 1979.

He was a member of the following: American Physiological Society, American Institute of Nutrition,

American Society for Clinical Nutrition, American Gastroenterological Association, American College of Nutrition (Fellow), American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition, International Society of

Parenteral Nutrition (Founder and first President, 1966), Society for Experimental Biology and Medicine,

New York Academy of Science, American Federation for Clinical Research, American Association for the Advancement of Science, and American Heart Association.

Collection Description

Personal papers of nutritionist and China native H.C. Raymond Meng (1917-2002) who was professor at

Vanderbilt from 1946-1988. Materials include slides, reference material, correspondence, manuscripts,
