Historical or Biographical Note
Dr. Virgil Shields Lequire (1921-2003) was a pathologist, professor, and researcher at Vanderbilt
University School of Medicine (VUSM). He received his BA in biology-chemistry from Maryville
College in 1943. He then received his MD from Vanderbilt in 1946. After medical school he had an internship at the Rochester General Hospital from 1946-1947. Dr. Lequire then received training in serology and blood banking at the U.S. Naval Medical School in 1947. He served active duty in the
U.S. Naval Reserve and did hematology research at the U.S. Naval Medical Research Institute from
1947-1949. In 1949 Dr. Lequire returned to Vanderbilt, where he served in a variety of capacities including: U.S. Public Health Service Post-Doctoral Fellow in Neurophysiology and Research associate in Anatomy (1949-1950), Assistant Professor of Anatomy (1950-1959), Associate Professor of Anatomy
(1959-1966) Professor of Anatomy (Cell Biology) and Pathology (1966-1991), CEO for Dept. of
Pathology (1968-1971), Acting Chairman for Dept. of Pathology (1971-1973), Vice-Chairman for Dept.
of Pathology (1973-1976), and Emeritus Professor (1993 -2003).

Collection Description
Personal papers of anatomist and pathologist Virgil Shields Lequire (1921-2003), Tennessee native and Vanderbilt Professor (1950-1991). Materials include research reports and data, correspondence, professional output, and retirement celebration materials. Research logs are organized by year and are primarily from 1954-1973. Collection also contains materials related to the various committees that Dr.
Lequire was a member.
