TH
THE 11 CONFERENCE ON THEORETICAL ISSUES IN SIGN LANGUAGE RESEARCH
On behalf of DCAL, UCL, and London, welcome to TISLR XI!
The first international conference on sign language research was held in Stockholm in 1979. Since then, this
series of conferences which later became TISLR (and the official conference of the Sign Language Linguistics
Society) has become the major international forum for sign language researchers. TISLR XI is the largest yet,
with researchers from over 35 countries taking part.
I would like to thank the members of the Scientific Committee, who reviewed an enormous number of high
quality abstracts, the members of the Organising Committee, who have worked tirelessly since TISLR X, the
Communication Support Team, and Claire Lister and the UCL Institute of Child Health (ICH) conference team.
TISLR XI could not take place without the support of its sponsors (in alphabetical order): Access to Work, the
Economic and Social Research Council, the Embassy of Japan, Fireco, Gallaudet University Press, John
Benjamins Publishers, Mocaplab, Mouton de Gruyter, National Science Foundation, Rochester Institute of
Technology, Sieratzki Charitable Trust, the Sign Language Linguistics Society, and University College London
Equality and Diversity, and to those individuals who made personal donations.
We hope you enjoy and benefit from the conference. We will do our best to make sure you have a great time –
academically and socially - while you are here.

Director, DCAL Research Centre and Professor of Sign Language and Deaf Studies
