TheproceduresbelowreflecttheProgram'scommitmenttogatherinformationand
providefeedbacktofacultymembersinwaysthatarecollegial,constructiveand
substantive.Theseproceduresincluderegularopportunitiesforexchangesbetween
tenuredanduntenuredmembersoftheAMSProgramCommitteethatfocuson
achievingexcellentteachingandonconstructivediscussionsofscholarlyworkin
progress.TheseproceduressupplementtherequirementsoutlinedinthePolicyof
Appointment,Reappointment,Promotion,andTenure.
I.ProceduresforUntenuredFacultyMemberswithFullorJointAppointmentsin
AMS
a.PersonnelReviewCommittee
Fortenure‐trackfacultymembershiredwithfullorjointtenure‐trackappointments
intheProgram,theProgramwillcreateapersonnelreviewcommitteeatthetimeof
hiringthatwillcontinuethroughthecandidate’sprobationaryperiod.The
personnelreviewcommitteewillbecomposedoftenuredfacultymemberswithfull
andjointappointmentsintheProgram,augmentedbyadditionaltenuredmembers
oftheAMSProgramCommittee(uptoacommitteemembershipoffive,plusan
alternate).Intheeventthatamemberofapersonnelreviewcommitteeisunableto
continueservingonthecommittee,thealternatewilljointhecommitteeforthe
remainderofthecandidate’sprobationaryperiod.Duringthecourseofthe
probationaryperiod,allmembersofthepersonnelreviewcommitteewilltaketurns
visitingclasses,offeringfeedbackonworkinprogress,andparticipatinginannual
reviews.Allpersonnelreviewcommitteememberswillvoteonreappointmentand
tenure.
b.AnnualClassVisits
Duringeachyearoftheprobationaryperiod,amemberofthepersonnelreview
committeewillvisitaclassatatimesuggestedbythefacultymemberbeingvisited.
Thevisitorwilldraftareportontheclassvisitandthenmeetwiththecandidate
withintwoweeksoftheclasstodiscussthereport.Theuntenuredfacultymember
mayrespondinwritingtothereport.Thereport,andanyresponse,willbefiled
withtheChairandmaybesummarized,alongwithotherreports,inletters
concerningreappointment,tenureandpromotion.
c.AnnualReview
Attheconclusionofeachacademicyear,theChairofAMSandatleastoneadditional
memberofafacultymember’spersonnelreviewcommitteewillconductanannual
review.Thisreviewincludesameetingthatwillprovideanopportunityforthe
untenuredfacultymembertoidentifyspecificgoalsforthecomingyearsothatthe
Programcanassistthecandidateindevelopingadossier.Discussionwilladdress
teaching,scholarship(includingworkinprogress),andservice.Aletter
summarizingthisdiscussionandanyrecommendationsmadeduringthemeeting
willbesenttotheuntenuredmember,whomayrespondtooramendthesummary
ifnecessary.
d.ReappointmentandTenureProcedures
Atthetimeofreviewforreappointmentortenure,allmembersofthepersonnel
reviewcommittee(typicallyeveniftheyareonsabbaticalorleave)willreviewthe
teaching,scholarship,andserviceofthecandidate,inaccordancewiththepoliciesof
thecollege.Thepersonnelreviewcommitteewillsolicitalltenuredmembersofthe
currentAMSProgramCommitteetocontributeinformationrelatedtoanyofthe
criteriaforreappointmentortenureforwhichtheyhavefirst‐handknowledge.
II.ProceduresforFacultyMembersAffiliatedwithAMS
TheAMSProgramwill,attheinvitationofthecandidate,contributetothetenure
andpromotionreviewprocessconductedbyhomedepartmentsofanyfaculty
memberswhohaveservedontheProgramCommitteeforthreeormoreyears,but
willnothaveavoteinthesedecisions.TheChair,inconsultationwiththecandidate
andwithmembersoftheExecutivecommittee,willprovidealettertothe
candidate'sdepartmentintimeforitsreviewandtotheCommitteeonTenureand
Promotion.Theletterwillassessthecandidate’steachingandscholarship,aswellas
describethecandidate'scontributionstotheProgram.Acopywillbeprovidedto
thecandidate.Thecandidatemayrespondinwritingtothatletter.
