the 2016 Spring Oratorio, Gioachino Rossini’s late masterpiece, the Petite Messe
Solennelle. Written during the composer’s long retirement from the opera world, the
piece was described by Rossini as “the last of my péchés de vieillesse” (sins of old
age). Originally scored for two pianos and harmonium, small choir and four soloists,
Rossini later orchestrated the work to save it either from oblivion or from a second
rate orchestration by another composer. The choirs welcome the Rossini Festival
Orchestra and soloists in a performance of the rarely heard orchestral version. Inna
Dukach ‘94, soprano; Chrystal Williams, mezzo-soprano; Alan Schneider, tenor;
Joshua Jeremiah, baritone; Amanda Huntleigh and Jonathan Hirsh, conductors.

MAD FOREST by Caryl Churchill, directed by Kitty Lixin Lin ‘16
This timely drama resulted from a trip to Romania. Developed with students from
London’s Central School of Drama, this is an incisive portrait of society in turmoil
that focuses on two families to reveal what life is like under a totalitarian regime
and what results when the regime collapses. The play’s brief scenes are almost
cinematic in their presentation of events as seen by ordinary people trying to live
in peace.
