Mission Statement, Staff Council Charter
“The mission of the Smith College Staff Council is to give members of the
administrative, administrative support and service staff a focused and direct
involvement in the governance of non-academic affairs and in the life of the Smith College community.
The Staff Council will ensure participation of staff in the policy-making process, promote visibility of staff as valuable members of the Smith
community, and facilitate a sense of belonging within the community. The Council will examine policies affecting the employment environment and the community and make recommendations to the appropriate committees and administrators. The Council will actively seek to
involve all segments of the College’s diverse staff in the College’s decision-making process.”
Council News
2009-2010 marks the 18th year of Staff Council.
The officers for the 2009-2010 term of Staff Council have been
elected. This year the Chair is Sandy Bycenski. Sam Rush returns to the council after a two year hiatus and will serve as the
Vice Chair/Parliamentarian. Jan Cole continues in her role as
Treasurer and the Secretaries are Chris Gentes and Kathryn
Messier.
Committee Chairs are as follows: Activities Committee - Scott
Morin; Diversity Committee - Abida Adnan and Ana Gorman;
Communications Committee - Barbara Pliska and Kelly Richey;
Nominations and Elections Committee - Sam Rush; Steering
Committee - Sandy Bycenski. The chair of the Personnel Policy
Committee will be elected at the PPC meeting in July.

be on a committee or to attend any of the committee meetings.
All staff are reminded that there is an anonymous comment box
on the Staff Council Web page. We welcome your suggestions,
comments or thoughts on any topic related to college issues.

Online Gallery
This month is the one year anniversary of the
online staff art gallery. Thanks to all who have
contributed photos and artwork to the gallery.
New to the gallery this month are two photographs of England by Tom Riddell, Associate
Dean of the College and Dean of the First-Year
Class.
Jan Morris, Wellness Office & Student Affairs,
has submitted three new photographs to the
gallery and Heather McQueen, Clark Science
Center, has added a botanical illustration.
All staff are welcome to submit images of art,
photos or other examples of creative activities.
