EXECUTIVE O]~DER BY THE Governor of the State of Texas THE STATE OF TEXAS EXECUTIVE DEPARTMENT OFFICE OF THE GOVERNOR AUSTIN, TEXAS AWR91-S ESTABLISHMENT OF TASK FORCE ON THE LOS CAMINOS DEL RIO HERITAGE PROJECT WHEREAS, a heritage corridor exists between Laredo and Brownsville that stretches for 200 miles along United States Highways 83 and 281, in portions known as "The Military Highway," around which outstanding historic communities and landmarks abound, it is a prime area for the development of a heritage corridor for this region; and WHEREAS, the heritage corridor has varied historic themes of state and national significance, including early Hispanic exploration and settlement, the ranching heritage of Texas, the Rio Grande steamboat trade, the United States Civil War and the Mexican-American War, and the development of the Rio Grande Valley's agricultural industry, which are all represented in the corriqor's landmarks; and WHEREAS, these historic landmarks have the: potential to attract tourism and to stimulate regional economic activity for the benefit of the State of Texas; and WHEREAS, there is a need for a coordination of public and private sector efforts; NOW, THEREFORE, I, Ann W. Richards, Governor of Texas, by the authority vested in me do hereby establish the Task Force on the Los Caminos del Rio Heritage Project. The Task Force is composed of representatives from the Texas Historical Commission, the Texas Department of Highways and Public Transportation, the Parks and Wildlife Department, and the Texas. Department of Commerce. The representative from the Texas Historical Commission is the chair of the Task Force. The Task Force shall meet at least quarterly in Austin to discuss with interested persons the most effk:ient methods to accomplish the development of the Los Carninos del Rio Heritage Project.
