Applying for Earth Science Scholarships - These instructions are for both current and incoming students – there are only a few places where the instructions differ. DEADLINE: JANUARY 15 1. New or Current Student – New students who have not already applied to UNI will have to fill out information about your academic background, ACT scores, address, etc. If you applied to UNI that information should be input the system, but you should double check that. Current students – all the information based upon your work at UNI is automatically entered including your GPA, number of credits, current major, etc. 2. Instruction Page – this is the first tab that shows up. For incoming and current students the instructions are different, so make sure you follow the instructions that are relevant to you. 3. Navigating – To get to the various places in the scholarship application to answer questions you need to select the various tabs – see below When you click on the various tabs you can either enter information or check your current information. There are instructions on each page for what you can enter or submit. For current students and students who have been admitted, much of this information is already input so you need not do anything. 4. Applying for Earth Science Scholarship – After you’ve completed or checked the data for the tabs “Personal Information”, “Prior Education”, and “UNI Information” you need to enter information under the “Involvement”, “Questions”, and “Essays” tabs. Involvement – Provide an essay about your involvement in a variety of activities as well as the contact information for two references. New students should provide contact information from those who can provide references for the students that address the students’ background. Current students usually provide contact information for past employers or UNI faculty who can provide input about the students’ experience and background. Questions – When you click on this several tabs will appear below the main bar (see below). 1 There are four different tabs with a variety of questions in each. For the “General”, “Demographic” and “Future Plans” tabs there are questions that apply to scholarships that are available to all students, not just Earth Science students – so be sure to answer these questions since they will make you eligible for more scholarships. Under the “Academics” tab are questions that are specifically for certain colleges, departments and/or majors. Questions that are specifically for Earth Science majors are listed with those for the College of Humanities, Arts and Sciences. There is also an error in the system and there is also a question under the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences that applies to Earth Science majors. If you have another major or minor, make sure you answer questions under the appropriate college for that major. Essays – You need to upload an essay for the college of your intended/current major. For Earth Science majors you would answer the question and upload the essay for Humanities Arts and Sciences. If you are also a major in another college, you must also answer that essay to be eligible for those scholarships. There is also a general UNI scholarship essay which is listed as “Financial Aid”. That essay will also make you eligible for university-wide scholarships. 5. Review and Submit – Once you answered all the questions, and uploaded the required essays, you should check all of your work on the Review tab. If you want to continue or if you select the word Finish in the navigation tab bar, you will be warned of anything you did not complete. You can still submit the application, but any missing information may make you ineligible for scholarships. You can also return later to finish the application, even if you have submitted it. 6. Scholarship Awards – Every effort is made to award scholarships as quickly as possible, with selection of awards made usually in late January and early February. All recipients will be notified of awards as soon as possible. 2
