AdmissiontoCourses:Instructorsarenotrequiredtoholdspacesforstudentswhodonotattendthefirstclass
meetingandmayrefuseadmittancetostudentswhohavenotattendedthefirstclassmeetings.
CourseProgram:Thenormalsemesterprogramfornon‐AdaComstockScholarsis16credits,withaminimumof
12creditsrequiredtoremainenrolledatthecollege.Studentsmaynotregisterformorethan24creditsinany
onesemester.
CourseRestrictions:Consulttheinstructor.Ifpermissionisgranted,submittotheregistrar’sofficeanapproved
“WaiverofRestrictions”form(availableonlineorattheregistrar’soffice)withinthefirsttendaysofclasses.
ExceptionstoclassrestrictionsforseminarsandspecialstudiesarebypetitiontotheAdministrativeBoard
FiveCollegeRegistration:EnteringtransferstudentsandAdaComstockScholarsareeligibletoenrollinFive
Collegecourses;firstsemester,first‐yearstudentsmustobtainthepermissionoftheclassdean.Interested
studentscanfindinformationandinstructionsattheregistrar'sofficehomepage.
LateRegistration:Itisimportantthatallstudentsregisterandmakechangesbytheappropriatedeadlines.
Studentswhoarenotregisteredforanyclassesbytheendofthefirsttendaysofclasseswillbeassessedalatefee.
Inaddition,thereisalatefeechargedforanyapprovedpetitiontoaddordropacourseafterthefinaldeadlines.
LanguageCredit:Policiesconcerningcreditforintroductorylanguagecoursesarepublishedinthecatalogueat
thebeginningofeachlanguagedepartment'scourselistings.Ifstudentsarecompletingintroductorylanguage
coursesthroughtheFiveCollegeInterchange,thecreditpolicyofthecomparabledepartmentatSmithapplies.If
thereisnocomparablelanguagetaughtatSmith,studentsmayreceivecreditforthefirstsemesteronly,but
distributioncreditisonlyawardeduponcompletionofthefullyear.
LimitedEnrollmentCourses:Studentsmustattendthefirstclassmeetingatthestartofthesemesterinorderto
remaininorregisterforalimitedenrollmentcourse.Ifyoudonotattendthefirstclass,theinstructormayfill
yourspacefromthewaitlist.Ifyouareonthewaitlistandareadmittedorwanttoaddalimitedcourse,youmust
obtaintheinstructor’spermission.Ifadmitted,submitanapproved“WaiverofRestrictions”formtothe
registrar’soffice.
MusicPerformance:Registrationrequiresapprovaloftheinstructor.Tocompleteregistration,studentsmust
submitacompletedandapprovedMusicregistrationformtotheregistrar'sofficebytheendoftheadd/dropperiod.
FormsareavailablefromtheMusicdepartmentofficeortheRegistrar’soffice.
Forenteringstudents,auditionsforplacementininstrumentorvoicelessonsforcreditareheldbeforethefirst
dayofclasses.StudentsmaysignupforanauditiontimeintheMusicOfficeinSageHall.
PerformanceCourses:Youmaycountonly4ESS,12DanceStudio(20forDancemajors),and24Music
performancecreditstowardsthedegree.Coursescompletedbeyondtheselimitswillbelistedonthetranscript
withagradebutwillnotcounttowardthedegree.
Permission:Coursesthatrequiretheinstructor'spermissionarenotavailableforonlineregistration.If
admitted,submitapproved“WaiverofRestrictions”formtotheregistrar’sofficewithinthefirsttendaysof
classes.Instructorsarenotrequiredtoholdspacesforstudentswhodonotattendthefirstclassmeeting.

RepeatingCourses:Normally,coursesmaynotberepeatedforcredit.Incourseswherethecontentvariesfrom
yeartoyearexceptionstothisrulemaybemadebytheinstructorandthechairofthedepartment.Astudentwho
hasfailedacoursemayrepeatitwiththeoriginalgraderemainingontherecord.Thesecondgradeisalso
recorded.Astudentwhowantstorepeatacourseshehasnotfailedmaydosofornocredit.Thesecondgradeis
recordedbutdoesnotcountinthegradepointaverage.Studentsintendingtorepeatacourseforcreditmustfile
asigned“WaiverofRestrictions”formwiththeregistrar'sofficewithinthefirsttendaysofclasses.
Seminars:Openbypermissiontojuniorsandseniorsonly.Ifadmitted,submitapproved“WaiverofRestrictions”
formtotheregistrar’sofficetoregisterwithinthefirsttendaysofclasses.First‐yearstudentsandsophomores
maynotenrollexceptbypermissionoftheAdministrativeBoard.
SpecialStudies:Opentosophomores,juniorsandseniorsonly.Submitanapproved“SpecialStudies”form
(availableintheregistrar’sofficeoronline)totheregistrar’sofficetoregister.
S/Ugradingoption:Astudentmayelectthesatisfactory/unsatisfactorygradingoptioninacoursewiththe
permissionoftheinstructor.StudentsmustearnagradeofC‐orbettertobeawardedasatisfactorygradeandearn
creditforthecourse.Amaximumof16creditsofS/Ugradesmaybecountedtowardthedegree.
Satisfactory/unsatisfactorygradesarenotcalculatedinthegradepointaverage.StudentsmaydeclaretheS/U
gradingoptiononlineatthetimeofregistration.Achangeingradingoptionmaybemadethroughtheendofthe
ninthweekofclasses.Seetheyearlongcoursessectionbelowforfurtherrestrictionsconcerningthegradingoption.
TimeConflicts:Studentsmaynotregisterforcoursesthatoverlapintime.Consulttheschedulebook;itmaybe
necessaryforyoutochooseanothercourse.AnyexceptionsarebypetitiontotheAdministrativeBoard.
Waitlists:Ifacourseisclosed,youmayaddyournametothewaitlistwhenyouregister.Youmaynotputyour
nameonawaitlistduringtheadd/dropperiod.SeetheLimitedEnrollmentCoursessectionaboveformore
informationandforinstructionsoncompletingregistration.
YearlongCourses:Studentsmustregisterforandcompletebothsemestersofayearlongcourse(designatedbya
"D"or“Y”inthecoursenumber)beforecreditisgranted.Anystudentnotregisteredforthesecondhalfofayear
coursebytheendofthespringregistrationperiodwillforfeitcreditforthefirstsemester.
 In“D”courses,thefirstsemestergradeistemporary;thegradeearnedattheendofthesecondsemesteris
thefinalgradeandreplacesthetemporarygradeofthefirstsemester.Thegradingoptionmustbe
consistentforbothsemestersandmaynotbechangedafterthefallS/Udeadline.Thegradesfor"D"courses
completedintwodifferentacademicyearsarerecordedseparately.
 In"Y"courses,studentsreceiveaseparategradeforeachsemester,butcreditisnotgranteduntilsuccessful
completionofthefullyearcourse.Studentsmayelectaseparategradingoptionforeachsemesterofa“Y”
yearlongcourse.
