Chris Shelton is the Chair of the Exercise and Sport Studies Department and the CoDirector of the Project on Women and Social Change. She received her B.S. and M.S. from James Madison University. She was a Peace Corps volunteer in Merida, Venezuela, 1970-72, and is a past president and past executive director of the National Association for Girls and Women in Sport (NAGWS). She has been involved with several international NGO’s that work for gender equity and to expand opportunities for women and sport. Professor Shelton teaches graduate courses in women and sport, sport pedagogy, and international women’s sport. At the undergraduate level, Professor Shelton teaches ESS 100 Introduction to ESS and ESS 200 Sport in Search of the American Dream. Christine’s research, theoretical and advocacy work is on equity issues which cross race, gender, and class. Ms. Shelton is one of the editors of the volume: Women on Power: Leadership Redefined. Her scholarship is directed toward bridge-building contact between the women’s sport community and the academic community.
