2008 IISH PUBLIC SEMINAR SERIES
You are invited to attend on:
19 February 2008, Tuesday 5pm – 6pm
Dr Fiona Adshead
Deputy Chief Medical Officer
Chief Government Advisor on Inequalities
Health Inequalities – Policy reflections on the English experience and why this is now a
global agenda.
Health inequalities are a top priority for the Government. Dr Adshead's seminar will discuss
the current cross-Government policy to reduce the health gap between the most affluent and
deprived members of society. Action must be both ambitious and concerted across society to
diminish such entrenched inequalities. If we are to reach the most deprived groups, such
action must be coupled with a willingness to use innovative measures to engage and
empower people.
The seminar will discuss current knowledge on what works at a local level and whether the
reasons for success are fully understood. Finally, it will examine why in a complex and
changing society health inequalities are becoming a compelling global agenda.
Dr Adshead is the Deputy Chief Medical Officer in the Department of Health for England who
has responsibility for the health improvement agenda. She leads on developing national
policy and programmes in key public health areas and works with colleagues across
government on developing healthy public policy. Specific areas that Dr Adshead leads on
include: Tackling inequalities in health, the prevention of cancer and heart disease, tobacco
control substance misuse, sexual health and nutrition.
