Steering Committee Global History and Culture Centre Meeting 4: Thursday 22 May 2014 2-3.30pm R1.13, Ramphal Building Minutes 1. Welcome A warm welcome is extended to Matthias Middell as our new external advisor and to Nile Green as a visiting speaker and IAS fellow. 2. Attendance David Anderson, Dan Branch, Maxine Berg, Giorgio Riello, Matthias Middell, John Darwin, Nile Green, Pat Manning, Amy Evans Apologies Bishnu Gupta, Claudia Stein 3. Financial situation The Centre is completing the second phase since its establishment. It has a sound track record research projects and wide research strands are successful at raising funds, a variety of grants enable us to organise different activities. The Centre has submitted and application of increased finance support from the University and the indication of success is positive. 4. Future GHCC plans, activities and funding A serious of events are organised by the Centre so far this year, with the Global Week yet to continue and IAS Visiting Fellow to come. A draft programme of activities of year 2014/15 is shown to the Committee. The Centre is to form a new theme of ‘Global Power’. To further establish our own identity, two things are important – Protect and continue our core interest and strength; Explore and develop new research strands and areas. 5. Research Projects In the pipeline – Collaboration with British Museum and British Library on ‘Trading Factories’; David Anderson has submitted the application on ‘Power and Politics’ to ERC; Charles Walton’s topic on ‘Global Humanity?’ to create a database for students/researches on human rights debate issues etc. The Centre will support activities of developing new area/strands. 6. MA in Global Studies A proposal for a MA degree in Global Studies is shown to the Committee and discussed. This degree based at Warwick, and largely comprised of History and Economics. It will combine a theoretically informed Economics approach and a strong global history knowledge base to students seeking further studies in globalization and global history. 7. CUP Books series 8.
