Research Projects Since Sep 2014 EQUIP Enabling Quantification of Uncertainty for Large-Scale Inverse Problems. This project will develop the mathematical, statistical and computational tools required to significantly advance understanding of large-scale inverse problems arising in engineering. In particular it will be aimed at the quantification of uncertainty in predictions based on imperfect physical models and noisy data. The work will be guided by applications arising in subsurface geophysics, including carbon sequestration, compressed air storage, ground and water engineering, and nuclear waste burial, as well as fossil fuel extraction. 67A Albert Street – London NW1 7LX - England T +44 (0)24 765 73495 • B c.schillings@warwick.ac.uk 2/7 Apr 2012 - Aug 2014 STAHDPDE Sparse Tensor Approximations of High-Dimensional and stochastic Partial Differential Equations (Sparse techniques for parametric differential equations). The focus of the project is on the efficient numerical approximation of parametric differential equations, in particular on methods which are dimensionally robust, i.e. whose efficiency (meaning accuracy versus computational cost measured in terms of the total number of floating point operations to achieve this accuracy) is provably robust with respect to the number of parameters. In order to allow for efficient approximations of the parametric solutions on the entire, possibly infinite dimensional parameter space, some form of sparsity in the parametric dependence of the solution is necessary. Based on the theoretical results, a major goal of the project is to develop numerical algorithms which allow to exploit computationally the sparse parameter dependence of the solutions and, hence, to achieve the optimal complexity by the sparse approximations. Jun 2010 - Mar 2012 DGHPOPT Discontinuous Galerkin Methods for Robust Aerodynamic Design on High Performance Computer Architectures. The DGHPOPT project is focused on developing new computational techniques for enhancing the capability of computational fluid dynamics simulations by exploiting the full potential of high-order discontinuous Galerkin methods, efficient optimization methods for robust aerodynamic design and the use of novel hardware architectures. Nov 2010 - Mar 2012 MUNAplus. On the basis of the project MUNA, the follow-up project MUNAplus focuses on further improvements and the increase in efficiency of the developed methods and approaches in order to reduce the additional computational effort arising from the treatment of uncertainties and the resulting robust shape optimization problems. Mar 2007 - May 2010 MUNA Management and Minimization of Uncertainties in Numerical Aerodynamics. The project MUNA was initiated to introduce uncertainties within the computational fluid dynamics simulation process. The main objectives of the project are identification and quantification of uncertainty sources, analysis of sensitivities and computation of confidence intervals, development of methods and strategies to minimize the main uncertainties and errors and verification of the developed methods and demonstration of their reliability. The University of Trier contributes to the proper treatment of irreducible uncertainties arising in the formulation of aerodynamic design tasks. Existing simulation and optimization methods will be improved, so that numerical uncertainties are identified, quantized and included in the overall optimization procedure, thus making robust design in this sense possible.
