Liell as follows Sirs Finding from undoubted authority that you have unloaded from the Ship Stafford under your Command considerable quantities of Goods contrary to our express orders sent you under date 1st August. We do therefore for and on behalf of the Hon.ble United East India Company hereby protest against, and make you Capt. Thomas Liell Commander and the Owners of the Ship Stafford liable, and accountable, and prejudice, the said United Company’s trade may suffer by your Disobdience of Orders. And we further absolutely require that no Goods whatever shall be landed from the Stafford after the receipt hereof’ till you have received permission from us for that purpose.’ Signed by all supercargoes p.53 ‘Advice is received of the arrival of the Bretagne a French Ship from the Coast of Coromandel off Macao.
