UCL DEPARTMENT OF GREEK AND LATIN The Iris Project and the Mayor of London’s Love Latin Scheme Classics Fairs Classics Day Classics Day, which has been successfully running for over a decade, has been organised annually in partnership by City Lit, The British Museum and the Department of Greek and Latin at UCL: a stimulating day of talks and discussions around themes related to ancient Greece and Rome delivered by specialists in their fields from all three participating institutions. The event traditionally takes place in early March each year in the beautiful BP Lecture Theatre at The British Museum and attracts a mixed audience with one thing in common: an interest in and a passion for the classical world! Anyone with a love of the Classics is welcome. No knowledge of Greek or Latin required! http://www.flickr.com/photos/hellenicsociety/7649935152/in/set72157630760690814 Photo Courtesy of Thomas Coward and the Society for the Promotion of Hellenic Studies For future events, please see the City Lit webpage: HOW TO FIND US AND CONTACT US www.citylit.ac.uk. The Iris Project (http://irisproject.org.uk) is a registered educational charity working in several UK cities, which aims to bring Classics to state school pupils who otherwise would have no chance to experience the ancient world. For almost a decade, it has organised a Literacy Through Latin scheme to teach Latin to primary school pupils; this core activity has since been expanded through the Mayor of London’s Love Latin Scheme, which organises school talks on Classical subjects. The Department has a long history of supporting Iris’ activities, both by sending student volunteers to teach in schools, and by organising two Classics Fairs each year, one designed to appeal to secondary school students, and the other to primary school pupils. To inquire about how your school can participate in and benefit from Iris initiatives, please see the Iris Project website, or write to: lorna@irisproject.org.uk. The Department of Greek and Latin at UCL is one of the best Classics departments in the UK. It offers study programmes at the BA, MA and PhD level, produces high-quality research and is keen to share its expertise with the general public. The Department is a vibrant community that covers all the main areas of ancient Greek and Latin language and literature as well as aspects such as philosophy, palaeography, linguistics and the reception of the ancient world in the modern period. We work closely with our colleagues in History and Archaeology to provide a breadth of course choices that is second to none. This breadth is also reflected in the two flexible degree programmes offered, Classics and Ancient World, which, beside some compulsory introductory courses, offer students the chance to sample a variety of aspects of the ancient world or to focus on particular areas of interest. While for the BA in Classics knowledge of ancient Greek and/or Latin is required, the BA in Ancient World is open to anyone with an enthusiasm in the ancient world, but no prior academic study is necessary. The Summer School (in July) offers a non-residential, eight-day intensive course in Greek or Latin (separate sections on other ancient languages are also offered from time to time). Our tutors include some of the most experienced and talented teachers of Classics in the London area and beyond. If you are interested in learning Greek or Latin from scratch, or in reviving your knowledge of the languages, this Summer School is for you!
