SYMPOSIUM: DEDICATION OF THE SCHOOL
OFLAW
Introduction
Richard B. Amandes*
On July 13, 1964, the Texas Commission on Higher Education
authorized a School of Law at Texas Tech. In 1965, the Legislature
approved an appropriation for 1965-67, designed to allow the creation
and implementation of the school. Preliminary plans outlining the
physical space needs of the permanent building were completed in 1966
by Howard Schmidt & Associates, the consulting architect for Texas
Tech. On December 19, 1966, the firm of Harrell & Hamilton of Dallas
was selected as the project architects. Despite the full commitment of the
Board of Directors and the administration of Texas Tech to provide a
permanent building for the new School of Law, it was impossible for
those quarters to be completed in time for use by the first entering class
in the fall of 1967. Seventy-two students commenced their law studie!\ in
the "temporary" buildings that were to serve briefly as the home of the
law school. Bids were opened for the new building on July 9, 1968, and
ground breaking ceremonies were held on July 20, 1968. The completed
building was accepted by the University on December 5, 1969.
These impressive physical facilities were made possible through the
interest and cooperation of many individuals and groups. The University
administration gave its support to the concept of building for the future.
The consulting architect, Howard Schmidt & Associates, converted the
needs and suggestions of the faculty into architecturally understood
forms. The project architect, Harrell & Hamilton, conceived a functional
design concept of beauty and majesty to house those needs and forms.
The contractor, H. A. Lott, Inc., of Houston, provided the
craftsmanship which brought the architectural ideal to life.
The building's occupancy began during the semester recess,
December, 1969. On February 21-23, 1970, the School of Law was
formally dedicated. The theme for the dedication seminars was "New
Developments in the Law." The program is recorded below.
