1.Scope
Submissionsareinvitedinallareasofbiomechanics,biophysicsandbiomateriomics,includingDNAand
proteinmechanics,cellularandmolecularmechanics,aswellasorganandtissuemechanics,coveringallscales
fromnanotomacro.Applicationareasbroadlyrangefromunderstandingbiologicalsystemsandmechanisms,
thedesignofbiologicallyinspiredstructuresandmaterials,tomedicalapplications,biomaterialsand
regenerativemedicine.Submissionsinexperimental,computationalandtheoreticalapproachesor
combinationsthereofareencouraged.Thisstudentawardrecognizesexcellenceinresearchamonggraduate
andundergraduatestudentstoengageanewgenerationofbiomechanicsresearchersinthevarious
applicationareas.
2.SubmissionandCompetitionFormat
Thecompetitionconsistsoftwophases:
1.ByApril1,2012,submita7‐pageresearchpaper(formatrequirementsandsubmission
informationbelow).ByMay1,2012candidateswillreceiveadecisionaboutinvitationasfinalistand
oralpresentation.
2.OralpresentationatEMI2012.Theawardwinnerwillbeselectedbasedontheevaluationofthe7‐
pagepaperandtheperformanceduringtheoralpresentationatEMI2012.
Criteriaforselectionaresolelybasedonthetechnicalcontents,whichwillbejudgedbasedonscientific
significance,intellectualmerits,noveltyaswellasimpact.
Allresearchpapersmusthaveastheirfirstauthorastudentorarecentstudent,nomorethanoneyear
beyondgraduation(atthedateofsubmissionofthe7‐pageresearchpaper).Itisexpectedthatmost
submissionswilldescribeMaster’sorPh.D.levelwork;however,trulyexceptionalworkdoneby
undergraduatestudentswillbeconsideredaswell.Eachcompetitorisrequiredtosubmita7‐pageshort
paper(12ptfontTimesNewRoman,1”margins,includinggraphics)todescribethebackgroundand
motivation,maincontributionsandimpactofthework,includingcitationstopublishedworksbythestudent
(phase1).Theworkdescribedinthe7‐pageresearchpapercanalsobepresentedatanothersymposiumat
EMI2012,butitisnotrequiredforparticipationinthiscompetition.
Althoughthepagelimitwillpreventpresentationofextendedexposition,sufficientdetailsshouldbe
includedtoallowareasonableassessmentoftechnicalmerits.Onthecoverpageofeachsubmittedresearch
paper,itshouldclearlystatedthatthepaperisintendedforenteringthe2ndY.C.FUNGSTUDENTPAPER
COMPETITIONONBIOMECHANICS,BIOPHYSICSANDBIOMATERIOMICSwiththeauthors’name,title(s),and

affiliationsincluded.Electronicsubmissionsarerequired.Basedontheevaluationoftheresearchpaper,a
groupoffinalistswillbeselectedwhowillpresenttheirworkinacompetitionsymposiumwithoral
presentations,tobeheldatthe2012EngineeringMechanicsInstituteConference(phase2).Apanelofjudges
willselectthefinalwinnerbyconsideringthequalityofboththepaperandtheoralpresentation.
Thecompetitionisopentostudentsinallacademicdisciplinesandcountries.Allparticipantsselectedforthe
finalcompetitionsymposiumareresponsiblefortheirowntravelexpensesandmeetingregistrationfees.

3.Award
TheawardofthisstudentpapercompetitionwillbepresentedattheEMImeetingandconsistsofaplaque
anda$300prize(checktobemailedtothewinneraftertheconference).Thewinningpaperandtheother
finalistswillbeinvitedforsubmissionoftheirresearchworkforpublicationintheJournalofEngineering
Mechanics(ASCE).ThisstudentpaperawardisacommitteeawardandwillbegivenbytheEngineering
MechanicsInstituteBiomechanicsCommittee.
TheEngineeringMechanicsInstituteBiomechanicsCommittee
Biomechanicshasemergedasanactiveresearchareathathasledtonumerousinnovationsoverthepast
decades.Thiscommitteereflectstherapiddevelopmentofthisfieldthroughtheincorporationofapproaches
fromphysics,chemistryandbiologyinordertoprovideamulti‐scaleviewpointthatconnotesamergerofthe
conceptsofstructureandmaterialinunderstandingbiologicalmaterials,fromnanotomacro.Thisisan
importantelementofhowmechanicswillcontinuetoevolve,andtheBiomechanicsCommitteeprovides
criticalleadershipintheseexcitingareasofengineeringscienceandapplication.TheEMIBiomechanics
Committeehasmorethan15memberswhoareactivelyengagedinbiomechanics,biophysicsand
biomateriomicsresearchandeducation.
