Greetings again from MTU!
Last year we talked about the highlight of our curriculum change being the senior capstone course in
Forestry. We are still learning a lot about how this sequence of courses is best organized. Last year, the
land used for case studies was on the Keweenaw Bay Indian Cornmuniry. This year it will be land
belonging to the Lake Superior Land Company.
In April we inducted our first Honor Academy . This includes past and current recipients of our Honor
Alumni Award. These are Floyd "Butch" Marita '60, Dennis Teeguarden '53, Roland Harmes '64, and
David Holli '61 . Others inducted are Barbara Clark, Thomas Gelb '57, Gerald Vande Hei '58, Kenneth
Brown '66, David Hartley '71, Daniel Miller '79, Howard Lindberg '89, William Veeser '49, Robert Homer
'42, Karin Van Dyke '78, Stephen Albee '86, and Eric Bourdo '43 .
New faculty members since my writing for the last yearbook include Doug Gardner, Tom Waite, and Kathy
Halvorsen. Doug received his PhD in Wood Chemistry from Mississippi State University and will be
teaching Composite Materials I and Wood Structure. Tom received his PhD in Zoology from Ohio State
University and will be teaching Ornithology and other wildlife ecology classes. Kathy received her PhD in
Forest Resource Management from the University of Washington and is on 2/3 appointment in Social
Sciences and 1/3 in Forestry. Here she will be teaching Natural Resources Policy and Human Dimensions
of Natural Resources.
We lost two faculty members to retirement. We are happy to report they are both in good health and
remain in the community and closely connected with Tech. These are Ros Miller and Ken Kraft.
We reported last year that Chris Phillips joined us as Advancement Officer. She has left us to be near her
husband in Chicago. We have hired Peter Caltelino, Class of '74, to replace Chris. We have already made
some significant progress in acquiring funds for scholarships and for other purposes since Pete's
appointment . Last year we reported a new face in the Forestry office, Dawn Loose. Dawn left in May
when her husband graduated in Mechanical Engineering. She has been replaced by Maggie Mleko.
Maggie previously worked at the Ford Forestry Center.
I regret to inform you that within the last year Lindo "Bart" Bartelli and Eric Bourdo passed away.
We have been very positive in previous reportS about a planned add ition to the building. Unfortunately,
the state funds that we had hoped would fund that addition will not be available at this time. We are
looking for private sources for funding. We hope that we will have more encouraging news on this in the
near future. In the interim, we have added two more trailers (for a total of three) to the parking lotto
accommodate space needs. We are also currently expanding the greenhouse and remodeling part of the
building to provide belter facilities for biotechnology research, undergraduate computing. GIS teaching and
research, and office space for faculty and graduate students.
Visit when you can. Thanks for your continuing interest.

Forester
Another issue of the Forester is complete! A tot of hard work and time went into the
making of this , the 45th anniversary edition , tt all started in 1950 when the 1st yearbook was
created. Since then, many changes have taken place both within the School of Forestry and
Wood Products itself, and the University as a whote. Through it all the Forester has provided the
students with a visual chronology of these changes.
Working on the Forester has always been fun, from our meeting which were
supplemented by Mary Jurgensen's wonderful homemade treats, to taking photos of everyone
we possibly could (usually at the worst moment possible!). Of course, the end product is what
'binds' us together, and we are very proud to present it to you ,
