Sincerely, W.E. Frayer Dean 2 Dean DEDICATION This year's Forester is dedicated to Andrea Longhini. Chances are if you've had to take a trip or eaten at a meeting sponsored by the School of Forestry and Wood Products, Andrea was responsible for making it happen. She also handles many administrative duties for the Dean. An Ontonagon native, Andrea attended Ferris State, where she obtained her B.S. in Office Management. In J982 Andrea married Guy Longhini and the two have since raised two children, Valery and Kenton. A cat named Star and a new dog named Snickers round Off the family. When Andrea is not here in the office, she enjoys many outdoor activities. Her summers are spent goifing and water skiing; in the winter she likes to downhill ski and to snowmobile. So, the next time you see her smiling face, thank Andrea for all the hard work she does for us. 4 Dedication THE YOUNG ONES . ~ Undergraduaces 5 Future Foresters Left 10 Righi Front: Dawn Clingenpeel Row Two: Marilyn LAdeman, Barbara Fillmore, Jesse Casko, Mark Salo, Mat Casey Row Three: MIssy Pllralnen, Derek Perry Row Four; Justin Walker, Joe Allen, Joe Forester. Clubs/Activities IS This year a special event is taking place. The forestry building will be named after our founder, U. J. "Bert" Noblet. Bert Noblet started the forestry program here at Tech back in 1936, and was department head until 1965. He retired then, but ca me back in 1967 to help Gene Hesterberg break ground for the existing forestry building. And now, in August of 1994, it will be named after the man who started it all. %e ~orester Sa[utes ... 16 Bert/ Bruce The Forester would like to take a moment to recognize Bruce Haataja, a man who has over 29 years invested with Michigan Tech. When Bruce first sta rted worki ng for the IWR (Institute of Wood Research), the forestry buil ding hadn't even been built; everything was done in a temporary Quonset hut behind the chemistry buil ding. Now, Bruce does research on molded strandboard development, which ca n be used for molded pallets, stacka ble containers, and even furniture. Perhaps the most rewarding experience for Mr. Haataja was when he was given the opportunity to instruct students in the Wood Science program. Bruce is retiring this year, but isn't going to let retirement slow him down. He's starting up his own company, specializi ng in .. you guessed it.. molded strand board. The Forester sal utes you, Bruce, and wishes you well in your new endeavors. 42nd Annual Midwestern Foresters' Conclave - MTU - 3rd Place - Katrin;;l Schnobrfch and Cheryl ColosImo gIve tlleff all in tIle 2·/ady log rol/ Above Left: Shawn Neider does his part to share with all 01 us his mouthful 0/ Beechnut Above Rigl1t: Kirk Kass is poised here in perfect form jor the Bolt Throw Lower Rlgl/(; Bob Burnam chops away to lake First Place In (lIe Speed Chop with an Impre!J'slve 2 min. 6 sec. It's hard to beli eve the year is over. For some of us, it's the end of an era of college life. No more trips out to the cabin, no more Conclave, no more late night cram sessions or computer projects to finish. It's time to pack our bags and say good·bye to Michigan Tech. For the rest of us, it's time to recover from a year of deadlines and homework by working our rear ends off at a summer job. But wherever you are headed, I hope the Forester did its job in presenting the 1993· 1994 school year. The Forester staff was absolutely fantastic this year. For the first time in the four years that I've been on the staff, we got our deadlines in pretty much on time. I'd like to thank aU the members who gave up thei r Thursday nights (and some of their $.25 beer ni ghts!) to come in and work on the Forester. Without their effort and drive, this book would not be in existence. We also had the help of a great woman who always brought us a snack on those Thursday meetings, and was there to encourage us (or give us a helpful shove); our advisor, Mary Jurgensen. Mary, we can't thank you enough (and I want the recipe for those fudge marshmallow thingsl) And with that, I'll close this up and be on my way. Happy trails to you all, wherever the road my lead you .
