Welcome!
On behalf of the 2015 Orientation staff,
congratulations on becoming a member of this
year’s talented Michigan Technological University
first-year class. At Michigan Tech, we have five
values that will provide a framework for your
educational experience. Orientation will help
you understand these values and learn how you
can incorporate them into your life. Orientation
events will address these values in greater detail
so you can better understand how to succeed as a
Michigan Tech student.
Community: During Orientation you will meet
other members of the Michigan Tech community.
It is important that you actively engage in a curious
and respectful manner with students, faculty,
staff, and members of the local community to get
the most out of your experience in Houghton.
Scholarship: Academic success is central to your
experience at Tech. You will learn about campus
resources and hear tips from faculty, staff, and
experienced students that will help you excel in
your studies.
Possibilities: At Michigan Tech, the world is your
oyster. You have the ability to study abroad, join
clubs, research, and solve the world’s problems.
Learn about how you can use your skills, knowledge,
and potential to explore possibilities.
Accountability: You’re in college, which means you
are now responsible for your destiny. We will do
our best to support you, but you need to act with
integrity, honesty, and diligence as you pursue
your education.
Tenacity: We live in the Upper Peninsula; you have
to be a little tenacious to come here. However,
we hope you develop the confidence and skills
to persevere through even the most challenging
obstacles.
During Orientation, you will receive a tremendous
amount of valuable information. Some of this
information you will be able to use right away;
some you may not need until later. As you begin
to get comfortable here, take time to explore
your different areas of interest. While you are
challenging yourself academically, get to know
different types of people, try new things, and make
the most of every minute.
The undergraduate Orientation Executive Staff
members have been planning an amazing week
for you—check out the details in this book for
more information. Your Orientation Team Leaders
(OTLs), academic advisors, professors, resident
assistants (RAs), commuter assistants, and many
others are here to assist you throughout your time
at Tech.
If there is anything that we in the Waino Wahtera
Center for Student Success can do to help, please
contact us at 906-487-3558 or send an email to
success@mtu.edu.
Best of luck!

result from differences in backgrounds, expectations, and experiences. To help prepare you for the
college transition, the staff of the Center for Diversity and Inclusion and International Programs and
Services will introduce the concept of diversity in
a new way, helping you to think about diversity in
terms of both your own identity as well as the identity of others. This session is intended to make you
