ADVOCACY N E W S
Texas Tech University School of Law advocacy teams have achieved outstanding success
in not one, but four different advocacy areas: appellate, trial, client counseling and
negotiation. Despite significant national titles in moot court and arbitration competitions,
the students refuse to rest on their laurels and continue to raise the bar and bring home
additional trophies. Tech Law advocacy teams finished as national semifinalists at the San
Diego Defense Lawyers Mock Trial Competition in the school's first year competing at the
tournament, and most recently, Tech Law defeated ten other teams to win the regional ABA
Client Counseling Competition and is advancing to the final national competition
March 16-17 at North Carolina Central University, Durham, NC.
M O O T C O U R T T E A M W I N S SECOND NATIONAL T I T L E
The Tech Law moot court team won its second consecutive national championship
February 2 at the National Moot Court Competition in New York City. Tech Law also won
the championship 32 years ago. The team of third-year law students Brandon Beck of
Austin, TX, Allie Hallmark of Midland and Elizabeth Hill of Lubbock prevailed over the
University of California-Berkeley School of Law in the final round. With the repeat win,
Tech Law becomes the second school to defend successfully its championship title. To complete the night, the team's brief was named top in the nation, and Hallmark was named the
nation's second-best advocate.
T E A M W I N S NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP IN ARBITRATION
The Tech Law arbitration team took another national championship Saturday,
January 21 at the American Bar Association (ABA) Arbitration Competition in Chicago, IL.
The team of third-year student Wade Iverson of Reno, NV, and second-year students
Meredith M. Mills of Austin, Jared Mullowney of Sunnyvale, and Kate Murphy of Katy
claimed Tech Law's 23rd national championship. This is Tech Law's third ABA
arbitration championship in the past five years, the previous two coming in 2008 and 2010.
The team won its regional championship in November after going undefeated against teams
from Texas, Louisiana and New York. The foursome continued winning in Chicago, never
losing a round en route to the championship. The students defeated Stetson University
College of Law in the semifinals and University of Missouri School of Law in the final
round.
T E C H L A W RANKED A T O P LAW SCHOOL FOR HISPANICS
Texas Tech University School of Law is ranked as one of the top 20 law schools for
Hispanics by The Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education Magazine. Tied for 16th position
with South Texas College School of Law, Tech Law is distinguished in that 35 Hispanic
students, or 17 percent of all Hispanic Texas students, attained a Doctor of Jurisprudence
from Tech Law during the 2010 survey period. Also of note, women comprised the
majority of Hispanic Tech Law graduates, 19 total, as opposed to 16 men. Overall, from 19
of the top 28 schools, Hispanic women received more degrees than Hispanic men.
