ABOUT TEXAS TECH UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF LAW
Texas Tech University School of Law boasts a rich history spanning almost 45 years. In the 1930s, Alvin R. Allison, a
self-described "country lawyer from Levelland," could not afford to attend one of the three American Bar Associationaccredited law schools in Texas. Instead of attending law school, he earned his law license by apprenticing under a
local attorney for two years and passing the Texas Bar Examination in 1934.
His struggle to become a lawyer inspired his quest to establish a law school in West Texas at his alma mater, Texas
Technological College. The Texas Tech Board of Directors hired Richard B. Amandes as the School of Law's first dean
in 1966, and in 1967, the first class, comprised of 72 students, entered Texas Tech Law. The ABA granted accreditation
to the school in August 1970, which followed accreditation from the Supreme Court of Texas in 1968. In 1969, Tech
Law gained membership to the Association of American Law Schools.
Since opening, the School of Law has graduated thousands of students, including the first woman to head a major
federal law enforcement agency, the Army's highest-ranked military legal officer and some of the nation's top litigators.
Texas Tech Law has developed a robust clinical program, three academic centers, 13 dual-degree programs, three
certificate programs, a recognized legal practice program and a competitive advocacy program that has earned 28
international and national championships.
Over the past four years,preLaw Magazine has named Texas Tech Law a top-20 Best Value Law School. The magazine
uses tuition, bar passage rate, job placement and average indebtedness upon graduation as determining factors in
creating the list. Other distinctions earned include Princeton Review's Most Accessible Professors for 2011 and a spot
in the Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education Magazine's top 20 law schools for Hispanic students.
With quality students, talented faculty and a devoted staff, the School of Law continues to produce gifted attorneys
who work across the state, region and country.

ABOUT THE KEYNOTE SPEAKER.
Robert A. Black, class of 1980, is the managing shareholder of MehaffyWeber,
P.C., in Beaumont. He is the 2011-2012 president of the State Bar of Texas.
Mr. Black is an accomplished litigator but focuses his practice on mediation. He
has handled more than 3,300 disputes, including complex class-action matters.
Mr. Black is admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court and the Texas
Supreme Court.
Among his many accomplishments, Texas Monthly has named him a Texas
Super Lawyer seven times, Best Lawyers has listed him as one of The Best
Lawyers in America nine times, and the Texas Bar Foundation Board of Trustees
elected him a Fellow of the Texas Bar Foundation. He also received the 2010
Distinguished Alumnus Award from the School of Law.
Mr. Black previously served as chair of the board of directors for the State Bar of
Texas and co-chaired the Nominations and Elections Subcommittee. He devotes
his time to more than half a dozen civic organizations in the Beaumont area.
ABOUT THE DOCTOR. OF JURISPRUDENCE ACADEMIC R.EGALIA
Tam
Instead of undergraduate or master's degree mortarboard and tassel,
law and other doctoral degree graduates wear a velvet tam with a short
gold tassel.
Gown
Texas Tech Law graduates wear a black gown. To distinguish it from
undergraduate or master's degree gowns, the Doctor of Jurisprudence
gown bears three black velvet bars on the arms and black velvet panels
down the front of the gown.
Hood
As customary with doctoral degrees, law graduates carry in the hood,
and a person with the same degree places the hood on the graduates.
The hood's exterior is black while its interior has purple velvet,
signifying a degree in the law, and Texas Tech's colors of scarlet and
black in satin.
