PhD project:
Supervisors:
Novel Biomaterials for Improving Human Health
Dr Matthew I. Gibson (m.i.gibson@warwick.ac.uk)
This project is fully funded (fees and stipend included) and is open to UK or EU nationals only. Duration is for
3 1/2 years starting October 2013.
Project description:
Our research is focused at the interfaces of Organic and Polymer Chemistries with the Life Sciences. We
make use of modern polymer and organic methods to obtain either wholly synthetic or hybrid
polymer/peptide based (nano) materials for various applications including
healthcare, sensors,
bionanotechnology, infectious disease and fundamental studies on macromolecules.
This PhD project will focus on using synthetic materials (polymers) to probe biological recognition processes
with the aim of treating and/or detecting disease. This novel approach of combining cutting-edge synthetic
polymer chemistry with relevant medical problems presents a unique and exciting opportunity. The Gibson
group is well set up for this with dedicated synthetic, analytical and biological laboratory facilities.
The student will work in the group led by Dr Matthew Gibson (www.warwick.ac.uk/go/gibsongroup) and
conduct the experimental work, which will include a diverse mix of synthetic polymer chemistry all the way
through to measuring real biological systems. The Gibson Group collaborates extensively with national and
international partners and there will be opportunities to work in other laboratories. We have particularly
strong collaborations with clinical scientists at local hospitals and also microbiologists working in the field of
infectious diseases.
Requirements:
Applicants should have (or expect to have) a good honours degree (at least 2:1) in Chemistry, Materials
Sciences, Biochemistry or associated disciplines
