Assignment 1 – SOP Development
CMD
Introduction
Purpose
The practical (summative) assessment for this unit involves three stages of assessment;
◗
Part 1 - Developing a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP)
◗
Part 2 - Practical use of the met station to collect data
◗
Part 3 - Collecting and evaluating the data collected
Task
This assignment constitutes Part 1 where you develop the SOP needed to run a portable
met station (using a provided template). The task is not particularly onerous and as there is
too much information to digest, you will get guidance in its development.
Structure
The assignment is broken into three Sections as follows;
◗
Part 1 – SOP for preparation
◗
Part 2 – SOP for the use of sensors and console
◗
Part 3 – SOP for the station software
Resources required
To undertake this assignment, you will need access to the following documents and
information from the relevant Subject Study Materials pages;
◗
The Davis receiver console manual
◗
The Davis sensor (met station) manual
◗
The Davis software manual
◗
The CMD Study modules may help at times
◗

Assignment 1 – SOP Development
CMD
Part 1 – Before using the equipment
Background
You are being trained and assessed for the collection and evaluation of meteorological data.
Over the next few weeks you will be working with a portable meteorological unit as a group
and collecting information about the use of the met station sensors, consoles and software.
In industry, this is a requisite skill as most environmental consultancies (and other people in
the industry) will rent their equipment rather than purchase it. This means that
environmental technicians will frequently encounter different types and models of
meteorological equipment.
When you rent equipment, you need to ensure that the equipment meets the standards
and your (or clients) needs.
Task
You will need to demonstrate your competence, and write an SOP, on the following as
aspects of the equipment;
1.1 - Perform a checklist on the portable meteorological unit
◗
Checking to see if all of the equipment is accounted for
◗
Determine if equipment meets Australian Standard
◗
Looking for obvious damage to casings, cables and other hardware
◗
Locating all user manuals, logbooks and manufacturer’s literature
◗
Determine correct siting requirements of equipment
◗ Determining the appropriate units and measures of selected equipment
1.2 - Undertake pre-site testing of all equipment
◗
Determining power supplies are operational or suitable for use on site.
◗
Performing diagnostic tests for each sensor and data handling / storage devices
◗
Some quality procedures (if any) may be incorporated at this point
◗ Powering down all equipment ready for transportation and use
1.3 - Load and transport the equipment to site
◗
Using appropriate packaging to safely store the equipment for transport
◗ Performing checklists
These tasks would involve not much more than following the manufacturer’s instructions
(which will vary according to each manufacturer).

Part 2 - Onsite use of the met station
Background
Once onsite, you will need to set up the equipment in accordance with the manufacturer’s
specifications and all appropriate standards. This requires some amount of double checking
to ensure everything will work fine while when you are absent.
Task
You will need to demonstrate your competence, and write an SOP, on the following;
2.1 - Set up equipment as per manufacturer’s instructions and appropriate standards
◗
Checking that the site location is accurate is the first step
◗
Unpacking equipment
◗
Setting up the met station and attaching sensors, loggers etcetera
◗ Ensuring stability of equipment for duration of test
2.2 - Test on-site application of equipment (quality control)
◗
You may be required to perform some quality control testing of the equipment
◗
Testing any telecommunications, logger or wireless connection
◗ Testing power supplies
2.3 - Set equipment to perform required tasks for set timeframe
◗ Start up all equipment to run for the required timeframe as per manual
2.4 - Perform post-application checks (quality control)
◗
Once the equipment has run its course, you need to stop the operation and perform
any required testing of data capture or sensor operation
◗
May require testing power supply is still functional
◗
Capture, record or load data from data logger to computer (or setup other technique)
◗
May require immediate transfer of data to computer drives or elsewhere

Part 3 – Post site maintenance of the met station
Background
Once the measurements are all performed, we can pack up and prepare for another job.
Task
You will need to demonstrate your competence, and write an SOP, in the following;
3.1 - Pack up and transport equipment back to source.
◗
This is simply the reverse of the unpacking procedure
◗
Transfer data to appropriate data storage device (data base or other)
◗ The data transfer may occur at this stage
3.2 - Perform simple data manipulations such as summary/descriptive statistics
◗
Once the data is on a useful computer, statistical analysis or summarising can occur
including averages, standard deviations and other descriptive statistical analysis.
◗
Provide simple reports based on summarised data.
Note…
You will submit one (1) SOP individually, but the SOP will be written as a group
What this means is that you collectively acquire the information about the procedures, but
then write your own version of the SOP to submit to your assessor.
