Why is there a student health insurance hold on my account?
All international students and graduate students of Michigan Tech are required to have health insurance. A
hold is placed on the account until the requirement is met.
Am I required to purchase student health insurance from Michigan Tech?
No. A policy can be purchased through the University, or the student may provide proof of comparable
coverage applicable in the U.S.
I have my own insurance; do I need to buy a policy through the University?
No. If the student has comparable coverage applicable in the U.S. they can satisfy the requirement by
completing the comparability wavier worksheet found here:

What happens if I don’t purchase insurance or prove comparability (hold remains on account)?
If the hold remains on a student’s account, the student will not be able to confirm their enrollment/classes.
The student may incur late fees (for tuition) and dropped classes if the insurance requirement is not met.
I completed the Health Insurance Comparability Waiver Worksheet. Where do I send it for processing so
the hold will be removed from my account?
Send the completed waiver worksheet along with a copy of the medical card to studentinsurance@mtu.edu
or fax to 487-3220.
How long will it take for the Health Insurance Comparability Waiver Worksheet to be processed and for the
hold to be removed from my account?
Waiver worksheets are processed on a daily basis. Please allow for 24 hours for processing.
Who is the student insurance carrier for health insurance purchased through Michigan Tech?
Aetna.
If I purchase student health insurance through Michigan Tech, when will I get my insurance card?
Enrollment files are sent by the Student Insurance office to Aetna once a week, on Thursdays. The member
ID card will be mailed to the mailing address (MA) on file with Michigan Tech (in Banweb) at the time
information is received by Aetna. Insurance cards should be received within 10 days after enrollment is
sent to Aetna.
How do I update my mailing (MA) address?
You can update your mailing address in Banweb and you should also contact Aetna to notify them of your
address change. (855-546-5417)

I purchased student health insurance but haven’t received my card yet. When will I get it?
The insurance card is sent to the mailing (MA) address on file in Banweb at the time coverage is purchased.
Keep in mind that enrollment information is sent to Aetna once a week. A temporary member card can be
printed and new cards can be ordered online at
www.aetnastudenthealth.com
When I try to register with Aetna it asks for my Member ID or Social Security Number, but I don’t have my
card yet. How can I register?
A student may use their M# in place of the Member ID or Social Security Number.
Can anyone purchase student health insurance through Michigan Tech?
Only enrolled students are eligible to purchase a student health insurance policy.
I’m enrolled for the fall semester, but will not be enrolled for the spring semester. Can I purchase annual
coverage?
Yes. As long as coverage is purchased at the time the student is enrolled, the student is eligible to purchase
annual coverage.
Can a domestic undergraduate student purchase student health insurance through Michigan Tech?
Yes. A domestic undergraduate student enrolled in classes at Michigan Tech may purchase insurance, but it
is not required.
What is the cost to purchase student health insurance through Michigan Tech?

Can I buy health insurance for my dependents?
The spouses and children of enrolled students are eligible for dependent coverage. Enrollment forms and
payment must be sent directly to Aetna. Find enrollment forms here:

Call Aetna at 855-546-5417 with claims questions. Have the member ID number and the date of service
