Congratulations on your recent hire!
Michigan Technological University is committed to sustaining a working and learning environment where students,
faculty, and staff can develop intellectually, professionally, personally, and socially. The office of Institutional Equity
facilitates Michigan Tech's creation of an environment that is free from prejudicial discrimination and harassment.
For employees, the costs and hardships related to discrimination, sexual harassment and retaliation in the workplace
have been documented in the news headlines. At Michigan Tech, it is each person's responsibility to create respectful
and harassment free spaces in all offices, labs, and work areas. In addition, Michigan Tech employees are often role
models for students to learn appropriate professional habits, so your understanding of the issues and setting high
standards of conduct are essential to our mission.
It is our responsibility as a university community to work towards eliminating discrimination, sexual harassment, and
sexual misconduct/sexual violence and to do so, we must be well informed. ALL employees of the university must take
an online course that addresses harassment, discrimination, retaliation and sexual misconduct. The course serves to
satisfy the federal requirement for training mandated by the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act of 2013 and
Title IX.
Michigan Tech, through the Institutional Equity Office, mandates that all employees complete this training within
45 days from their start date. You will automatically be enrolled in this course upon employment and you will be
notified through email that you are enrolled. You can begin, pause, and return to the course to enable you to complete
it as time permits.
If you have any questions or concerns regarding this course or other related training, please feel free to contact the
office of Institutional Equity at any time. Beth Lunde, Associate Director of the Office of Institutional Equity, is the Title
IX Coordinator for the University and is available to assist you in your training needs.
You will also be contacted by other departments regarding additional required courses that you must take which are the
annual Employee Safety Overview and the annual Data Security course.
Please keep the following link to “Institutional Equity Anti-Harassment, Anti-Discrimination Resource Guide for
Employees and Students: Information on Harassment, Discrimination, ADA, and Title IX” bookmarked on your computer
or ask the Office of Institutional Equity for a hard copy. (http://www.mtu.edu/equity/pdfs/resourcebook.pdf)
