This" handbook" outlines" the" main" policies" and" procedures" within" Italian" Studies," also" offering" an"
overview"of"the"main"courses"of"study."Much"more"information,"including"on"specific"modules,"is"
available" via" the" departmental" website" (www.warwick.ac.uk/italian)." Please" keep" this" booklet" at"
hand," since" the" information" will" be" valuable" when" it" comes" to" examinations," essay" deadlines," or"
any"problems"you"may"run"into.""
"
Italian"Studies"is"part"of"Warwick’s"newly"established"School"of"Modern"Languages"and"Cultures,"
which"comprises"the"former"Departments"of"French,"German,"Hispanic"and"Italian"Studies,"as"well"
as"the"Language"Centre."Although"the"areas"of"study"above—along"with"their"particular"locations,"
cultures"and"Heads"of"department—continue"to"exist"in"practice,"they"will"increasingly"become"a"
tightly^knit"unit."This"should,"among"other"things,"foster"better"communication"with"students"who"
are"doing"their"degree"in"more"than"one"language."It"will"also"lead"to"more"uniformity"of"practice."

"
Italian"Studies"is"located"on"the"fourth"floor"of"the"Humanities"Building."The"secretary’s"office"is"in"
room"4.05,"across"from"the"lifts"if"you"enter"the"building"from"the"Library"Road"entrance."

1.1&Registration&and&Induction&
"
Warwick" currently" runs" three" terms" of" 10" weeks" each." Teaching" is" concentrated" in" the" first" and"
second"terms;"the"third"term"is"devoted"to"revision"and"examinations"(there"is"some"teaching"in"
Term" 3" for" first^year" students)." The" first" and" second" terms" have" a" ‘Reading" Week’" in" Week" 6,"
during"which"no"teaching"is"delivered."Wednesday"afternoons"are"traditionally"free"from"teaching"
so"students"can"engage"in"various"sports"activities"(see"also"sections"5.1"to"5.4)."

The"first"term"begins"on"Monday,&29&September&2014."All"students"will"have"received"information"
from"Academic"Office"regarding"registration"procedures."

"
The" atmosphere" in" the" department" is" informal," and" it" is" easy" to" contact" individual" members" of"
staff." Office" hours" and" email" are" the" most" commonly" used" means" of" communication," but" staff"
members"are"also"happy"to"meet"with"students"at"other"mutually"convenient"times,"particularly"in"
the"case"of"urgent"queries."Do&be&considerate&in&your&use&of&email&and&plan&in&advance:"staff"are"
not"expected"to"reply"to"emails"outside"of"usual"working"hours,"and"in"any"case"may"not"be"in"a"

1.3&Who’s&Who?"
"
Italian"Studies"is"a"friendly"and"collegial"department"without"rigid"hierarchies"but"with"a"developed"
administrative" structure" to" ensure" the" smooth" running" of" its" operations." The" department’s" core"
personnel" includes" seven" members" of" academic" staff," two" teaching" fellows," five" postdoctoral"
research" fellows," one" secretary" and" one" administrator." In" addition" there" are" part^time" teachers"
and"around"18"PhD"students,"many"of"whom"are"involved"in"the"department’s"teaching"activities,"
for"which"they"are"trained"to"a"very"high"standard."For"core"staff"contact"details,"see"section"10."

The" Head& of& department" is" ultimately" responsible" for" overseeing" the" efficient" planning" and"
execution"of"the"department’s"functions"in"terms"of"teaching"and"research,"both"at"undergraduate"
and" postgraduate" level." He" or" she" chairs" the" department’s" staff" meetings" (twice" per" term),"
approves" course" transfers" and" is" ultimately" the" person" to" be" contacted" in" case" issues" have" not"
been" resolved" through" conversations" with" other" members" of" staff." In" addition," staff" members"
fulfill" the" following" essential" roles:" the" Director& of& Undergraduate& Studies" ensures" the" smooth"
delivery" of" the" undergraduate" curriculum" and" is" responsible" in" the" first" instance" for" considering"
requests"for"exceptions"to"specific"degree"regulations.""The"Director&of&Graduate&Studies"oversees"
the" admission" and" progress" of" MA" and" PhD" students." " The" Undergraduate& Admissions& Tutor" is"
responsible" for" the" processes" of" admission" and" recruitment" for" Italian" Studies" and" often"
represents"the"department"at"Open"Days"or"in"other"settings."The"ERASMUS&Coordinator"ensures"

Students" are" required" to" take" four" modules" simultaneously" in" order" to" be" fully" registered." Some"
modules" may" be" ‘whole’" (i.e.," year^long)" modules," worth" 30" credits" (CATS)" each;" others" may" be"
‘half’"(i.e.,"one^term)"modules,"worth"15"credits"each."Italian"Studies"requires"you"to"take"one"year^
long"module"in"Italian"language"per"year."The"other"modules"that"you"take"depend"on"your"degree"
programme"(see"the"tables"in"section"14)."

A"good"point"to"remember"is"that"the"degree"in"Italian"(‘Single"Honours’)"allows"you"to"concentrate"
on"the"study"of"Italian"language"and"culture."Joint"degrees"enable"the"coherent"study"of"another"
subject"alongside"Italian"language"and"literature"and"foster"awareness"of"different"methodological"
approaches" to" knowledge." There" are" two" kinds" of" joint" degrees:" ‘Italian" WITH" ___’;" and" ‘Italian"
AND"___’."The"first"implies"a"degree"programme"weighted"towards"Italian"Studies,"and"the"second"
one"equally"balanced"between"the"two"subjects.""

Italian"is"the"home"department"for"all"of"its"50/50"degrees"with"the"exception"of"Hispanic"Studies"

Studying"for"your"degree"you"will"develop"both"specialist"skills"(i.e."those"related"to"your"specific"
